IS RETURNED.
Atlanta, Ga., Dze. 15~Frank De
land, of Lansing, Mich,, was acquit
ted of the charge of manslaughter
late Tuesday afternoon by a jury in
the criminal divisions of the Fulton
superior court, Judge W. K. Thomas,
of Valdosta, presiding.
Deland, accompanied by his wife
and two daughters, was on the way
to Florida to spend the winter when
his machine ran over and killed Miss
Irvine Woltz as she stepped off a
Hape«villev car in Hapeville. He was
indicted on the charge of involuntary
manslaughter and held in the Tqwer
in default of $5,000 bond. |
Following the verdict, Mr. Deland
stated that he did not know whether
he would continue his trip to Florida
or return home. His family was
pl'esexft in the court room when the
verdict was made and all of them
thanked the jurors. ;
Deland told the jury that Miss
Woltz, who was a student at Cox col
lege, became confused when she saw
hig automobile just ag she got off the
street car. He stated that he had
seen her step off the street car and
had swered in order to pass back of
her and she jumped into thye path of
hig auto. The machine pascad wover
her angd she died a few minuteg later.
The Mexican sugar crop of 1921 is
estimated at 100.000 tons. Forty
thcusand tons of this will be export
ed. ‘ \

Judge 'Wilson Refuses tc Call Extra
Court Session,
Moultrie, Ga., Dec. 14 —Judge W.
E. Thomas, of the Southern circuit.
has announced definitely that he will
not order an ex®ra session of the
Colquitt county grand jury to inves
tigate the charges of violence against
negroes in the Doerun section,
Conditions are quiet around Doe
run now and there have heen no dis
| crders there since a mass meeting
lwas held ‘at which resolutions calling
upon the officers to enforce the law
and condemning the outrages against
the perscens and property of negroes
were passed. '
Judge Thomas in his statement de
claring that he weuld not convene a
gpecial session of court pointed out
that the regular January term con
venes about the middle of that,
‘month. At that time the grand jury‘
will be called upon to conduct a thor- |
cugh investigation of alleged in
stances of violence in the northern
part of the county, |
Will Send Offenders to Jail.
Judge Thomas said, however, that
if “there is any further threatened
lawlessness on the part of any indi
vidual of individuals and that fact is
communicated to me I will issue an
order direating the sheriff to take
the individual or individuals into cus
tody and hold them either in prison
or under a peace bond until an inves
tigation ean Dbe hal.” Judge Thoem

here in Moultfi'é, it being pointed out
that since conditions saround. Doerun
are again normal there is no pressing
need for any such action, especially
in view of the fact that it is but a
few week's before a regular sessism‘

SAVANNAH MANS BODY IS
FOUND FLOATING IN CIL
Savanqa.h, Ga., Dec. 14—John Jos
eph Brennan met his death in an un
usual manner here today, dying from
asphyxiation inducted Ly flames from
a tank ofycrude oil in which he was
working af the Gulf Refining Com
pany’s plant on Hutchinscn Island.
He was 24 years old.
Into the enmormous tank he went
this morning with his two helpers
to inspect” the steam fittings. His
agsistants complained of the fumes
and begged him to come out. He
refused and they left him. Half an
hour afterwards his body was found
floating upon the oil in the huge
tank. He was a son of a Savannah
policeman and was well known.
EMERYWHEEL BREAKS
MAN FATALLY WOUNDED

Dalton, Ga., Dec. 1-—The victim of
a peculiar accident, Mr. John Moose
a well-known machinist, cperating a
shop at McCutchen, this county, diec
Saturday afternoon, the body heing
taken to Wood Station, in Wialker
County, Sunday for interment.
Mr. Moose was grinding an ax on
an emery wheel when the wheel
proke, a portion of it striking him in
the abdomen. He lived from Thurs
day afternoon until Saturday after
noon.
He was about forty years of age
and is survived by his wife and one
adopted daughter, Miss Nellie Moose

near here, for several weeks -has

to collect tuition fees from patrons
in order that the session might cov

of seven.
