ADS, SAYS J. 8. CAPPER
Sends Letter to Newspapers Protest.
fthg “Untrue Statements” On Cloth
ing Prices.
Chicago, Nov. 15.—John 8. Capper
presidentof Capper & Capper, men’s
wear retailers, has just addressed ~
letter to the Chicago newspapers
protesting against news items they
have been publishing in recent days
'as unfair to the retailer. In com
{menling on this action, Mr, Capper
‘gays he is not vain enough to think
that his single protest will cut much
figure, -but it is possible that if simd
lar letters were written to the news:
pa’ers by other merchants, it might
have a decided effect, Hig letter to
the Chicago newspapers says:
~ “Your pages are filled with adver
tiging by retail merchants, offering
bargains to the public, many of them
at a postive loss to the merchants
many of them at less than the cost of
the material alone.
. “The retail merchant is in the
position of not only losing money on
his merchandise, but paying the cost
I‘of 25 to 30 per cent overhead to sell
}the merchandise, besides an addi
‘tional expense paid to the newspa
pers for the advertising to advise the
‘public of these bargains, which bar
g.ains are absclutely genuine; made,
possible only by éxtreme distress of
retailer or manufacturer who has lost
money.
“All of this advertising is nullified
by news itemsg on your front page,
which would be bad enough if true
but worse when the news contains
statements that are absolutely unw‘
true, with the result that'the ¢onsum
ing public are obsessed with the idea
that present bargains are not bar-l
gains at all; that if they will wait
still longer, they will get still lower
prices. In fact, you create the im
pression in your news items that re.
tailers are still making money on
goods that are heing sold at these
reduced prices.
“If your news items were absolute
1y within the truth you might be jus
tified on the theory that you had to
zive the news whether it hurt your
advertisers or not, but when you slop
over and print in your news items
st,atements that are absolutely un
true isn't it a fact that you go out
of your way to ‘hurt the hand that’s
feeding you?.”
“1 ‘have seen in numerous papers
the statement that shirts could be
‘bought for $6.60 that were sls—as!
false a statement as could possibly
be made. |
“I have seen in the newspapers the
Statement that clothes could be
bought for $16.650 that were ordinari
ly wholesaled at $45.70. It is abso
lutely false. In spite of the losses sus
tained by the manufacturers, losses
that run into the millions, 1 think 7
am within the truth when I state
that a suit of clothes formerly selling
a $47.70 might be purchased for $3O
or $33, which is 100 percent more
than what your news items give it.”

SCENERY IS DESCRIPTIVE
AND ADDS CHARM TO ENID
BENNETT'S NEW PHOTOPLAY.
One of the many interccting inci
dents of “Her, Husband's Friend,”
Enid Bennett's new Paramount pho
toplay, called for a scenic backgroun:
of weird and vivid beauty, and the
get designed and built by the Thom
as H. Ince Architectual Department
is one of the mosi unusual ever con
structed. It saggests the depths and
mystery of the forest, and the shad
owy creepinesg of a cave, without ac
tually being literal photograph of
trees and rocks.
Indeed, ‘it can more fittingly be
called deseriptive scenery than mere
background. It bears the same rela
tion to the actors, as the music of the
orchestra does to the gingers. It sux
gests and (_-,m'ries'f_m the note of sus:
pense and awe, which is the keynote
of this particular incident.
From both a scenic and picturesque
point of view, the setting is consider
cd one of the most (\lilb())‘iikfj"'lll(l vivid
ever produced in a studio. It was
built from a series of charcoal
sketches, and although it”iy a great
étructural achievement, ' being nearly
a ‘hundred feet in length, it is also
decidedly noteworthy as an artistic
triumph.
