CORN STALKS VALUABLE
AS RAW PAPER MATERIAL

By The Asscciateg Press,
AMES, lowa, August 5.—A t'n of
corn stalks in this region has been
considered so much agricultural
waste, but the chemical enginecering
department at lowa S’mtc College
has found it to be worth, at present
prices, about sl.£o a toa when wcon-.
verted into raper. o
Professor O, R. Sweeney, hcad of
the department, has manufactured
paper ol a fine quality from corn
stalks 2nd he believes it can bhe made
to match in quality any stock of
woodpulp paper. Professor Sweeney
already has vicions of papar mills in
these prairie states, bringing Lack an
industry which the country is losing
with the passing of its forests.
The question of utilizing corn
slalks for the making of paper in
volves a number of industrial prob
lems into which the chemists have
been delving. Professor Sweeney’s
experiments show that by means of
a chemical process \\'m"k(-'l ont in
his labcoratoiy, six tenths of a ton
of paper cap be made grom a ton of
stalks. Town produces bhetween 20,
