Noah Carried Beer And |
Wine In Ark, Is Claim|
PHILADELPHIA, Pa., April 9——(!P)!
—Beer and wine made up part of;
Noah’s cargo the ark. i
This was revealed, speakers before|
American Oriental society said tozl:'.y‘
through the translation of a tablet!
found in Ninevah by George Smith,l
of the British Museum and restored,
by Paul Haupt, professor of Assyri
ology at Johns-Hopkins University. I
Professor Haupt told members of,
the oriental Society that the flood‘
tablet was found in 1872. It ,had‘
been deciphered previously by oth-l
er Assyriologists, but the speakeri
said the recent translation waz more’
comprehensive. {
Professor Haupt’s translation re-!
lates how Noah cut down trees in'
the jungle and iaid the frame of his
ark, which consisted of six decks,
divided into seven compartments. Af-|
ter its cargo was taken aboard-!
Professor Haupt said, two thirds of.
the ark was under water, - [
“For our food,” read Professor.
‘Haupt’s translation of the tablet, “I.
claughtered oxen and killed sheep
day by day. With beer and brandy,
oil and wine I filled large jars, as'i
with water of a river.” ; :

Chapman Counsel Say Theyl
Made Nothing On Trial
HARTFORD April 9.—(P)—Ger
ald Chapman, reputed to have had at
least $2.500,000 at his command at|
the time he was arrested at Muncie.!
Indiana, on a murder charge, hadl
bui $8,700 available for his dcl'enso,l
it became known today. Of this)
amount $4,000 was contributed by:
friends and assistants of Chapman|
in New York City, after his convic-l
tion here. The $8,700 and more is'
declared to have been spent by his,
counsel in the preparation of the
defensé and in expenses after his
conviction .in April of last year. !
Attorney Joseph M. Freedman said
that $l,OOO had been received by his
firm as counsel fees, and a similar
amount went to Frederick J. Groehl,
of New York, senior counsel in thq
aefense, but claimed all of this and|
more was expended so that actually
nothing was realized by the attor--
neys for their efforts in Chapman’s,
behalf, . |

Row In Buckingham Palace,
Over Prince Of Wales’ Wife
LONDON, April 9—Now that tho‘
Prince of Wales is recuperating from’
his recent illness, the gossips are
busy again with his matrimonial in-l
tentions, and the Tribune Press Sur-i
vice is informed by a good authority:
that a first-class row has blown up;
in Buckingham Palace over the se
lection of a future. ‘
Both the king and queen have|
been urging him to marry and both|
have made efforts to select a wife.i
but the prince has replied that he'
was not in a hurry and at any rate
he insists on selecting a bride for‘
himself. His selection is said to be!
Lady Mary Cambridge and this is:
the cause of the family trouble. l
Lady Mary is a daughter of tho'
Earl of Athlone, who is a brother of|
Queen Mary, and Lady May, and
therefore is the prince’s first cousin
and is barred by the table of con-!
sanguinity which the king had prp,"
pared some years ago by the royal
physicians and to which he attaches
great importance.
The queen, however, is anxious to
see her owng niece succeed her as
queen and encourages the rrince’s
desire. It is also said that the queen
does not like the prospect”of the
Duchess of York, who is not of roval
blood, succeeding to her posiffon. as
she is sure to do if the prince is
not married and she and the Duke of
York outlive him. ‘
The duchess has just moved into a
new house and is preparing for the
advent of a new arrival in her family
