| DOOM OF REFORM BY GEOR
| GIANS.
' WASHINGTON, April 22—
President Coolidge is opposed to fed
eral regulation of the amusements
of .the people, now being sought zea
lously by various reforng leaders who
have carried their campaigns into
congress.
He came out Tuesday against fed
cral censorship of moving pictures
! as provided in a bill by Representa
i tive Upshaw, Georgia dry leadery re
cently considered in a house com
i mittee. A few days ago he expressed
' his opposition to a measure in con-
I gress which would clamp a “blue
| law” on the capitol, closing the ball
’ park, moving picture shows and
theaters on Sunday. This bill, too, is
sponsored by a Georgian, Repre
gentative Lankford. 1‘
These two incidents, following
one another so closely, have spurred
THE CORDELF. DISPATCH
liberals to believe that the reform,
movementp as expressed in such ef--
forts will lose much ofsits strength.
Opponents in congress of these two
measures predicted - Tuesday that
they probably will die quickly as a‘
result of the president’s oppositien.
The president’s stand gives an in
sight into his character, for person
ally he is not a lover of sport, nor}
does he go to moving picture showSfl
though he enjoys the movies, and a
couple of films are carried along on
the Mayflower on its cruise dowr
the Potomac. But he is a believer imi
sport and in wholesome amusementsi
and thinks they should be encour
aged and not subjected to fcdera]“
regulation. i

Dream Is Gold Plated
CHICAGO, April 22—(#P)—Helen
Novak, 16, Chicago’s “Cinderella”l
awoke from her golden dream andi
found it was merely gold-plated andl
very thin at that. So through an at-i
torney, she started suit for separate]
maintenance against John Novak,
wealthy owner of 12 retail meat
markets. Novak is 62 years of age|
and he and Helen were married Jan-|
uary 25, of this year. !
“I got one pair of shoes three|
days after our marriage,” she saidl
*And I had to beg for them. He|
came to me one week after our mar
riage and said his children did notl
like the match and that his babyl
‘wife would have to divorce him.” He
offered her $1,500 to go ahead with
the divorce proceedings, but she re
fused, so he raised his price to $2,-‘
