A feature of the exercises held at
the school auditorium Jiemorial Day|
was the award of three prizes of al
$5.00 cold piece each to successful
contestants in essay contests. '
Two of these prizes were purely,
local and were given for the best o::-f

son Davis,” by pupils of the sixth|
and seventh grades Junior Hich, |
O'Neal school;. and the sixth grade,

The prizes were given by the chapter.
and by Miss Atking, and were won by
Miss Catherine Brown, of the Junior |
High, and Miss Pearl Coken of tho:
Northern Heights school. In the|

were won by James Patterson and;
Dorothy Royal, while in the Nort‘n--@
ern Heights School second and third
places were won by Mildred Burnam |
and Frances Wallace. The topic for;
this contest for next year wiil be
Jozeph E. Johnston, and three prizes
will ke awarded, Mrs. W. "C. Rey
nolds having added a serond prize
for the Junior High, so that the
sixth and seventh grades will contest
separately. |
The third prize was awarded Miss
Mildred Brown, the successful con-.
testant for Crisp county in the state
U. D. C.; contest, the topic being
“the history of the Confederate
{lags.”” This prize was given by Mr.!
¥. 4. Bartholomew, who has given,
a prize through the U. D. €., for a!
number of years, as a compliment to
his wife who was president of the
chapter, at the time this first was!
given. Miss Brown’s paper has géhe
to the state committec. The second
and third places in this contect were
won by Miss Kathryn Vinson and
Migs Dorris Bryan, all high school
pupile. '
