Our Four Days In Cuba
,‘L’ . BY MRS, C.E BROWN
'l'h'; first night of our #tay in Ha
vana,"the Georgia editors had an op-“
portunity to visit a Cuban cabarct
whers a buffet supper of dainty
arntph dishes and wines was served
whilé'a beautiful Sonorita entertain
ed with graceful dancing illustrative
of Mexican, Spanish, Italian, and
Englith art, :
Thé next morning, April 24, the
editars were taken for a visit to the
Houfe of Representatives where a
receplion was held and each lady
presehted with flowers and the gen
tlemen with cigars. In the afternoon
the editors were treated to a typi
¢al Quban concert, One striking
thing there was the great number of
chiléen in attendance and their per
fect .attention. The Cuban children
are freat and well behaved. This was
at a great opera house with five bal
conigs all around the main floor.
* THe night of the.24th was filled
to ~oyerflowing with interesting
things." We.madd a visit to the news
papers where we were given a most
cordfal reception. “El Pais” has the
nost, elegant and cleanest apart-|
npnth’lmgin!ble. The floors and'
stairways are all beautiful white
marble and the furnishings are ele
gant, even to slightest detail. Every
thing looks so immaculate that you
wontler how any work is done there.
Even™in the mechanical department]
the same air of cleanliness prevails,
'l‘he.,i)’o’&ple of Havana are unusuallyl
glean people-—everything is so sani
tary qnd well kept. There are not
dirty stréets, all of them being paved
and Kept in perfect condition. The
bousés and hotels all have beautiful
tiled floors, {free from dust. This is
a striking thing in Havana, no dust,
smoke, or soot—just a beautifui
cleanliness every where. After visit
ing the newspapers we had a lovely
drive for miles over one of the most|
beautiful sections of the city out to|
the Yacht Club, This is a newer part.l

of town and is thoroughly modern,
the residences being really palatial,
The beauty of these homes cannot be
surpassed and the ride around Bay
I'ront Drive as it is lighted at night
is indeed a beautiful sight. Finally
the Yacht Club was reached where
we stopped and examined the inter
esting relics’ of the Maine and made
an inspection of this beautiful club,
go full of interesting things, of his
torical interest, |
On Sunday, April 26th we spent
the day sight-seeing and visited, in’
the morning all the places connected
with Columbus, among these the ca
thedral where his ashes lay in a crypfl
in the wall until the end of the.
Spanish-American War when thcl
Spanish rule ended in America, It is
seid the ceiling in this ancient ca--
thedral required a man lying flat on
hig back seven years to paint, This is
one of the oldest buildings in thc‘
New World. We next visited the Co
lumbus Memorial Chapel which is on
ly open to visitors once a year that
being on the birthday of Columbus.{
We visited the Castillo De La Fu-?
erza and the guide showed us the
tower where the wife of De Soto
watched for him for four years and
when he did not return, she died of
o broken heart, We had all the prin-f
cipal monuments explained to us and
there are a great many, as the city is!
¢0 very old there are many departed’
heroes. One of the most beautiful
monuments to be found is that ereet
ed to the heroes of the U. S. Bat
tleship “Maine” on Malecon Drive.
We visited the Central Park wherei
the band plays as they have openmirl
concerts, We made a visit to the |
large hospital which is beautiful
white marble and exquisitely kept.l
We next vigited the most interest-!
ing, most aged and most beautiful|
cemetery to be found anywhere in
that country. All this sight seeing
was made poesible thru the courtesy
of our Cuban hosts who spared no
pains to show us everything and at
no expense to us, |
In the afternoon we were ready to!
o again and they had reserved tho(
eream for this occagion. By the time
the Tropical Beer Gardens were
reached we had exhausted all our
suprly of adjectives and wished for
cven greater superlatives to exprese¢
our intense admiration and delight.
We drove for miles and miles thru
the most beautiful residence section
I have ever seen, finally arriving at
the Beer Gardens which is the acme
of a!l that is beautiful, Paradise can
not be much more perfect and beau
tiful than these wonderful gardeng
—God made and man made, for
there is a wonderful commingling of
God’s gifts and man’s art here. At
the top of a hill is a castle built ex
actly like the Alhambra in Spain
with tiled floors and walls that are
Spanish in design and execution.
The flowers that surround it call for
many exclamations of rapture from
enthusiastic tourists.
Sunday night (they have no
church there except once a day) au
tomobiles were ready at 8 o’clock to
carry us to see the national Spanish
ball game which was quite excitingl
and interesting. On Monday night a
most elabarate banquet reception
was tendered the newspaper people
by the editors of “El Pais” Mr. Al-'
fredo Hornedo. This was elegant and
beautiful in every respect. It wasl
gerved on the roof of the Plaza Ho
tel which was fairly ablaze with
many vari-colored lights. At the close
of this affair those who desired were
taken to the Tokio cabaret where
Cuban dances were indulged in, thus
bringing to a close four days full of
entertainment to the Georgia editors
{rom these hospitable people. Too
much cannot be said in praise of
their friendliness, their hospitality,
their appreciation and of their ex
quisitely beautiful city of Havana.
On the morning of our departure
we had the pleasure and privilege of
T'HE CORDELE DISPATCH
visiting the Palace of the- President
of the Cuban republic. This is 'a
dream, made of pure white marbie
of which there is an abundance used
in Havana. It is’ obtained from the
Isle: of Pines which is nearby and is
used extensively, i
The president was quite affable
and gracious as he shook the hands
of cach of us, I had the pleasure of‘
conversing with him by means of an
interpreter and he seemed to appre-!
ciate our enthusiasm for his country.
Our paring from the Cubans at
the wharf was really touching. They
stood there as long as our boat could
be seen and waved as long as they
could see us. They seemed loath to
let us go and we bade them a reluc-]
tant farewell, for we had by this
time formed a most favorable im
presgion of the Cubans along with
their beautiful country.
