Fokker Visions Wilkins’
Success In Pole Flight
BOSTON, May 14-—(®)—Anthony
G. Fokker, airplane manufacturer
who 'designed the machine jn " which
Licutenant Commander Richard E.
Byrd flew over the'north pole, had to
comé to Boston on an old-fashioned
train, today. " o
“Ithave sold all my.planes,” said
Mr. '.FOkker. “I‘haye only one little
training plane left?” '
“Byrd was ducky,”. the manufac--
‘turer told the Boston chapter of the
National Aeronautic Association. He
had an airplaine that was tested. It
had flown 40,000 miles before he
took it. Wilkins had a much harder
task. He had to take a plane that was
not tested; that had not even been
fully rigged. He had to make boat
connections and time was important.
The result was he had to face all the|
correétions of testing wunder most
difficult conditions. Ultimately he
will have success too.” |
Commenting on future commercial
aviation, Mr. Fokker declared radio
direction finders were solving the
final difficulties of the air and that
the “time is not far distant when we
shall be able to land in the dark
without seeing, anything at all.” |
