THE HILLS
I had forgotten the hills . . .
Still contours againgt wild skies,
Color that shifts and spills,
Color that storms and defies,
Color, that buins and glows,
Nowiwiddy and hot and gay; '
Again as chill as a winter dawn,
Cold-blue against colder gray.
. s
1 had forgotten the hills ... |
Forgotten the singing Joy
Of leaping along a forest.path
With the glee of a carefree boy -
Untouched by caution or grief,
As wild as wind from the sea;
I had forgotten, in e¢ity streets,
Such ready ecstacy.
§
I had forgotten the hills .. . :
Their rhythmic cadence and stir,
Their rushing, chattering rills,
Their splendor of sumac and fir;
Their strong, dark silences
And then the bright caress
Of autumn’s sunshine on your cheex
Her red leaf on your dress.
I had forgotten the hills . . .
But now I have come again ~
To a land of sky and brown elched
trees,
Tar from the noise of men,
Where the wanton autmn winds—
Now loud, now soft and low—
Over the solemn listening hills
Their silver bugles blow. :
I had forgotten the hills . . .
But they have remembered me,
So onee again I am on the road,
Wind-blown, sun-kissed and free!
