Winter Weather Envelopes
France In ‘“‘Sunny South’’
PARIS, May 19—(#)—Snow, rain,
hail and gales, such is the merry
month of May in France. Winter
gports have been resumed in the Au
vergne mountains, where skiers are
out in force.
The sunny south is worst sufferer
from the elements. Rain has been
falling ceaselessly for the past week,
and the temperature has been drop
ping almost as fast as the rain. It
is now colder than it was in January.
Fruit crops all over France have
been ruined and cereals are threat
ened if the improvement predicted by
the weather forecaster does not ma
terialize quickly. Many valleys which
suffered badly at the beginning of
the year from floods again are men
aced by rising waters,

Plague Of Fleas Scourges
French On Riff Front
SUE IDA, Syria, May 19—A
plague of fleas is menacing the
French army which is engaged in
fighting the Druse rebels. It is al
most unbelievable, but the insccls
swarm over Sue Ida by the mil
lions.
A Druse house contains 10,000
fleas per room. Men sometimes have
to fight for their lives against this
plague which seems never to have
bothered the natives. Tons of in
secticide have brought no relief.
The army is anxious to march on
the mountains, where the Druses
are making their last stand in the
craters of long-extinct voleanoes.
The soldiers regarding fighting the
Druses easier than fighting the ver

and friends what they were crying
about.
She refused to believe that after
sinking into a coma nine hours pre
viously she had been pronounced‘
dead or that funeral arrangements
had been made. A cemetery plot ‘hadi
been purchased and the burial was
scheduled for Sunday. Mrs. Milsteini
82 years old, has been suffering from
