: ~ EVENSONG
The embers of the day are red -
Beyond the murky hill,
The kitchen smokes, the bed
In the darking house is spread,
The great sky darkens overhead,
And the great woods are shriil,
So far have I been lead,
Lord, by Thy will;
So far I bave followed, Lord and
wondered still
The breeze from the embalmed land
Blows sudden towards the shore,
‘& clasp my cottage door,
I hear the signal, Lord —I under--
stand, .
The night at thy command
Come. I will not cat and sleep and
will not question more,
ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSO.
THE GENTLE VOICE,
A kind voice is like music in the
home, and is to the heart what light
and beauty are to the eye. Watch
the tone in which you speak and take
care that it is gentle and sweet. A
sharp voice shows more ill will than
the heart feels and people believe
the speaker to be ill-tempered ani
disagreeable. It is so easy to pick up
a short and snappish manner of
speaking and is often acquired in the
battle of words in which boys and
girls delight. There is a great deal
of fun and no malice intended, but
meantime the voice is gradually ac-‘
auiring a short, snaprish tone with
out its possessor, being aware of it.‘
This clings (o them thru life and
causes people to misjudge them and
gain the impression that they are
unpleasant people and not worth cul
tivating.
Kind hearts are more plentiful
than the gentle voice would indieate.
yet the voice is often what peopie
judge others by.

SUGGESTIONS.
One of the new ideas being sug
gested in upholstered chairs s
having the cushion of a figured ma
terial and the rest of the chair a
plain fabrie. It proves not only er
fective but also very practical.
Qucen Anne yeriod furniture ov
any of its adaptations can be up
' holstered correctly in a number or
diffcrent materials such as velvet
l damask, Lrocade, woll tapestry, silk
linen, needlework and leather. An
} upholstery is oftentimes l"inished{
with large brass headed tacks which
show, l
' A gallon glass cide: cup makes a
- very good lamp base and with itz
handle is very casy to move about.
The jug can be decorated on the
inside to make it look unusual by
pouring in for example a. black
paint wit stirring it around vigor--
ously. When this has dried, pour in
a green paint and stir it around.
- The effect will be most atiractive.
In preparing grapefruit, use . the
curved grapefruit knife and separate
the fruit from the rind. Cut out the
core. Insert the blade in the center
and cut around; the memsrane thus
is entirely freed from the rind. Then
with a straight-biaded knire separatel
each section. The whole membrane
may be lifted out, leaving nothing
but the fruit.
