NEW ROAD "N WARE WILL A:D
. SCHOOLS, SAYS CAVENDER
WAYCROSS, Ga.,, June 9—(P)—-
The paving of the proposed Way
cross to Lake City (Florida) highway
will be a boon to rural education in
south Georgia territory traversed hy
it, R. C. Cavender, superintendent of
schools in Ware county, declares,
The route will pass through Ware
Clinch, and Echols counties in Geor
gia, and will lead through Colum
bia county, Florida, to Lake City. 1t
will traversa a fterritory virtually
undeveloped, along the edge of the
famous Okefenokee swamp., Advo
cates of the route are urging, 0w
ever, that it is one of the most im
portant interestate routes proposed
to the Georgia highway board.
The paving will afford an v~
tunity for the consolidation of five
emall one-teacher schools in thige
routhern section of Ware county, Mr
Cavender points out, It is impossible
under existing conditions to effect
a consolidation hecause of the con--
dition of the roads, and the inad--
visability of operating consolidated
school houses,

NOT REACH ROOT OF EVIL.
\
WASHINGTON, Jun‘ B.~~Benator
George, of Georgia, announced today
that he would attempt to . insert
“tecth” in the bills passed by the
house for ending the patronage evil
in the south when the measures are
taken up for action by the senute
Judiciary committee,
As passed, the bills will not reach
to the root of the evil, in the op nion
of Senator George.
He doeg not helieve they iwould pre
vent the use of money in purchasing
or influencing appointments, pointing
out that money still could be handed
over after an appointment was made,
and charged up to contributions to
campaign funds.
Plan Is Not Ready.
He was not ready to outline the
details of the amendments he w il
seak, stating that he will give the billg
passed by the house close study in
order to determine how they bhest can
be strengthened.
One of these bills makes it unlaw
ful to pay or promise to pay money
or “any ‘other thing of value” to se
cure a federal appointment, with a
penalty provided of a jail sentence
not exceeding one year or a f ne not
over $l,OOO, or both, This measure
wag sponsored by Representative
Stevenson, South Carolina, democrat.
The other requires that every fed

HUNT FOR LOST KITTV
WARREN, Ohio, June 9—(#)—
Two men from Atlanta, Ind., were

of a yellow cat,
- They obtained a search warrant
here and with a justice of the peae

The men gaid Stillwell, during o

cat and they thought he had taken
it home with him.
Stillwell said he had taken only ¢
passing interest, and not the cat, He
took the search philosophically.
