GOVERNOR GRANTS (COMMUTA
TION OF SENTENCE TO MAN
WHO SHOT WIFE'S MOTHER.
ATLANTA, Ga,, July 2—(#)—
While John D, Batchelor, sentenced
to die tomorrow in the electric chair
at Milledgeville for the murder of his
mother-in-law, was preparing tc
spend his last hours alive in the death
cell tonight, Governor Clifford Walk-‘
er late today gave the defendant aj
new lease on life when he commuted
his sentence to life imprisonment. |
In his evecutive order, the chief
executive pointed to the fact that
clemency for the doomed man had
been recommended by the trial judge
the solicitor general of the circuit
and eleven of the jurprs who had
sealed his fate, because they believed
he was mentally unbalanced. The
sworn statement of a physician alsc
held that Batchelor was “mentally
weak.”
As further reason for granting
the clemency appeal, Governor Walk
er pointed to the fact that at the
trial evidence in the case showed that
Batchelor’s own family had turned
against him, and that his smal)
daughter was his chief witness whe
testified against him. He held
further that it was evident that there
was much “bitter feeling” against
the man within %is own family.
It was in August of last year that
Batchelop* killed Mrs. Fannie An
derson, his mother-in-law, during a
family quarrel, claiming that he had
shot her accidentally when he was at
tempting to end his own life and she
grabbed the pistol. Batchelor was
tried and convicted of first degree
murder, his nine-year-old daughter
showing extreme bitterness against
her father in testifying at his trial, |
