MELLON’S VIEWSI
puns s il |
WASHINGTON, July 21_-—(/P)'J
The remarks oi Winston (‘hm‘chill,l
chancellor of the British exchequer,
on Secretary Ilellon’s analysis of
England’s debt to tis country was
countered today Ly the treasury with}
figures. ‘
" In support of Mr. Melion’s stato-!
ment that “England bouirowed a
large proportion of its debt to us
for purely commercial a: distinguish
ed from war purposes,” Acting Sec
retary Winston offered an itemied
account of Great Britain’s $7,200,--
000,000 expenditures in this country
during the war.
He declared the figures spoke for
themselves and in the absence of
Secretary Mellon, who is en route to
Europe for his vacation, he declined
to comment on the assertion of Mr.
Churchill before the house of com--
Imnns vesterday that Mi. Mellon
might have been misquoted or misled
| in his recent discussion of the world
war debts. .
Mr. Winston *ook exception, how
ever, to the chancellor’s declaration
that England spent about $3,000,000
0900 of its “own independent re
sources” here.
In the table of figures he item--
ied the payment of only $760,0000,-
2000 “by cash from Britain’s own in
dependent resources.”
