OFFICE PHONE 30
“WAIT A MINUTE”
Latet to your labor and aware
That precious time is winging
You hear a harsh, metallic blare—
The telephone is ringing!
You view your long neglected task
Impatient to begin it,
But when: “Well, who is there?”’
you ask “ o l,"'l;
A voice says, just a minute!” |
To prey to homicidal ire ‘
You rage and fume and sputter—
What time the silence of the wire
Is absolute and utter.
Then, feeling fully satisfied
The speaker has departed,
You thrust the telephone aside
And try to get things stared.
But ere you do a single thing 1‘
Or get your temper steady ‘
You hear another strident ring 1
And yell: “Well, are you ready?”
But if you think the call complete
Erroneously you've reckoned:
A voice iin accents soft and sweet
Says gently: “Just a second,”
Who called &_"&u up? ‘You never KioWw’
Nor waste no time in wonder,
You selze a book and with on= low
You re‘xd the phone asunder;
And if you don’t if still you heed
The jingling and t‘he pealings
That from the telephone proceed—
You have no human feelings!

CIVIC CLUB.
The Civie Club presents this bit of
poetry to you today. It expresses,
and expresses well, just what it
takes to make our club a success
and Cordele a town beautiful:
“It is not the guns or armaments
Or the money they can pay,
It’s the close cooperation
That makes them win the day,
It is not the individual
Or the army as a whole,
But the everlasting team work
Of every blooming soul.”
EDITED BY JULIA NEAL
tablespoon uncooked rice, one slice
of onion, half a tomato, fresh or
canned, and a ring of green pepper
IPor each chop used, now add one
third cup chopped celery, one-half
teaspoon salt, a dash of pepper and
a half cup of water. Bake three
hours in a moderate oven, adding a
little more water if absorbed too
quickly, When using canned toma
toes the liquor may be strained and
used instead of clear water, The
celery cooked with the pork gives
the latter a savor of chicken, and
the rice as it thickens up, becomes
deliciously flavored.
Shamrock Salad -
On a foundation of leaf lettuce
place a mound of cold, cooked spin
ach, thoroughly drained. Sprinkle
with salt and a few drops of vinegar
and on this place a generous slice
of cream pimento cheese. Garnish

pepper. As this cheese is rich, no
drezsing other than vinegar is need
ed. This salad is as pretty as it is
appetizing, and abounds in vita
mines,
