THE WEATHER PHILOSOPHER
In summer I'm a-wishin’
For winter time to come,
Al:;d hear the blizzard bangin’
6{ his_big bass drum!
When the roses bloomin’ bright,
F;ill th’e garden with delight,
I'm lo‘nging for the fireside
A.'.'d a frosty winter night!
It’s just the way with people
Who never seem to know
You can’t have as you want ’em,
flg voses and the snow;

The* n has its way, ’
And thank the Lord for winter,

. PARIS, Nov. 15.—(AP)— King Al
‘hert of the Belgians and Marshall
Foch, generalissimo of the allied
forces in the World War, are at odds i
over a question of war facts. |
' The, controversy came into the oren’
ltoda.y with the publication of a letter
from the king to the marshal, dated
Saturday, categorically denying
Foch’s quoted assertion that he per-:
suaded Albert not to allow the Bel
gians to retreat from the Yser in
1914, |
<~ The king's letter replies to state
ments attributed to the marshal by:
Stephan Lauzanne in an Armistice‘
day article printed by Le Matin. i
Albert says that when Foch first
called on him, on November 16, 1914,;
his_ (Albert’s) proclamation that men~‘
tion of retreat would be treason was
already three days old. I
| Marshal Foch today refused to com- }
ment on the king’s letter. Among his
|intimates, however, it was pointed
fout that the article to which the;
; king refers was not an interview but
la recital published on the responsi-‘
Ybility of the author, M. Lauzanne, and
Ithat the marshal could not be expect
ted to interpret it.

COURT FROWNS ON
- “WATER CURE” GIVES
{ NEGRO NEW TRIAL
} JACKSON, Miss., November 16—
(#) The “water cure,”” a method of
torture by which water is poured in
to the prisu‘)ncr’s nose, and said to be
a common practice in gections of
Mississippi, was frowned upon today
by the Migsippi supreme cuurt in
granting a new trial to John Fisher,
Coahoma county negro.
Fisher was sentenced fo hang after
the judge of the Coahoma circuit
court admitted as evidence a con
fession to the murder of Grover C.
Nichols, a white man, said to have
been obtained by officers through
the administration of several doses
of the “water cure.”
Testifying as a witness for the
defense in the trial, the sheriff of
Coahoma county told the court he
had been asked to go to the jail to
take a confeszion from Fisher. The
confession was made, he said, after
several men had poured water into
the prisoner’s nose. }
Hicks Ellis, who said he aided in
the administration of the “cure,”
also testified as a witness for the de
fense.
The supreme court in overruling
the decision of the lower court had
granted a new trial, held that thc'
constitutional rights of the defend
ant had been violated. l

METHODISM’S OLDEST
PREACHER IS OWED
‘ 3,000 BY CHURCH
. ATLANTA, Ga,, November 16—
(P)—Georgia Methodists owe Rev. J.
V. Morris, of Athens, Ga.,, Metho
dism’s oldest preacher, $3,00 in back
salary, he told the North Georgia
Conference of the Methodist Epis
\ copal Church South, here today.
He explained that the shortage was
dues to the fact that in several
vears in the past some charges had
not been able to raise their budgets
' and accordingly not able to pay the
; pastors in full. Their shortage, pro
tested Mr. Morris, have never been
made good,
The aged preacher has been a mem
ber of the North Georgia Confer
ence since 1885, During the inter
vening 41 years, he has missed only
one conference session, and that he
says was because of illness in his
family Although superannuated, Mr.
Morris finds occasion’ to preach ol
ten. He teaches a class of young mcen
in the Sunday School of his home
town, having held this place for 14
years. Althbugh he has passed his
ninety-sixth birthday, he insists he
will attend conference after he has
passed the century mark. -

“That’s Right! Dietz Lanterns Do Give More Light!”
N your next trip into town don't forget to
buy those new lanterns.
Doubtlees you prefer Dictz Lanterns, as do most
other people. Perhaps you also_know that the
biggest value you get in a Dietz Lantern is com-
Elctcly hidden from view—its unequalled com
ustion system—which produces a more powet
ful sustained light than it is possible to obtain
from any other make of lantern.
This is because the flame in a Dictz Lantern is
more pcrfcctlx carburcted and gases and va‘pors
are consumed or released that in less skillfully
designed lantcrns simply cloud the globe, gradu
ally rfducing the radiance of light as burning
proceeds.
