MOVE WILL BE TO

FORE CONGRESS, il
WASHINGTON, December 12—
(P)—Prospects of tax legislation by
the present congress received still an
other setback today when it develop
ed that Representative Tilson, repub
lican house leader, :favm_‘s application
of the treasury surplus to a reduc-.
tion. of the pblic debt.
Tilson’s view is that the move to
carry out Coolidge’s suggestion for
credit on next year’s tax payments
would pave the way for protracted
rolitical controversy, inasmuch as the‘
democrats have announced that they
would press for action on their tax
reduction measure. :
“I have come to the conclusion,”
said Tilson, “that the best thing to
be done at this seésion of congress:
is to immediately apply any surplus
above actual needs of the govern
ment to reduetion of the public debt
which, as the president so well says
in hismessage, is itself a permanent
tax reduction. The announcement by
Tilson indicates -hat hearings may
not be held by the house ways and
‘means committee on the resolution
designed®to carry out the Coolidge
suggestion.
