per acre. The average cost was
around .50 per bushel, this includes‘
cost of labor for man and horse, and
fertilizer. : l
Mr. R. A. Bedgood at Arabi was |
winner of first prize. He made 420
bushels on five acres, an average of|
84 bushels per acre. |
This is the highest yield repm‘tedi
in Dooly, Sumter, Bibb, Turner or
Tift county.
Mr. Huckby on Dr. V. O, Harvard’s
farm, near Arabi, won second prize
‘with 74 bushels average per acre.
i Mr. J. R. Raines made 315 bushels
on his five acres or an average of
{63 bushels per acre.
. These records are not what you
:might call world beaters, but they are
actual records made on land that was
lmeasured and all of corn weighed.
These yields Were made on five acres
and not on one acre which makeé]
them pretty fair records when con-lj
sidered from this standpoint.
We feel sure that some of our men
will win some of the money offered
at Moultrie and possibly some of the
state money to be given at All s,
We are not satisfied with thess
ireco{‘ds and we want you 1o heln 18
‘beat them next year. Cet your Ll
’land ready now f()r our five acre con
test negt year. :
When we raise our average yield
|up from 15 bushels per acre to 30
! bushels per acre our corn will cost
lus less and we will have all the corn
i v-¢ need. This contest proves that we
ic:m grow more corn per acre if we
will only try. We need corn for our
work stock, cows, chickens, hogs and
| tor tlie farm fainily. Grow more and
we will ‘be sure to have piéntr,
RAINFALL IN ARKANSAS TAKESI
TOLL OF LIFE AND PROPERTY|
LITTLE ROCK, Ark.,, December
23—(P)— Heavy rains throughoul;f'
the state in the last - forty-eight
hours, reaching record proportions
in some secticns, have swollen
streams to their banks, taken a heavy
_toll in property damage and resulted.
_in three known deaths from drown
ing. :
| Three young girls on their way to
school plimged to their death near
here in a small creek, made swirling
torrent by the rains, when a bridge
cclapsed under the weight of the
wagon in which they were riding to
day,
They were Feleta, 15; Mollie 10;
and Merle 8, daughters of Winfield
Crowson, a farmer, Crowson and a
young son reached safety only after
a furious struggle.
Storm sewers in many cities and
towns in the state have lacked ca
pacity to carry the hecavy brden of
water, resulting in damage to prop
erty in some places. Many towns are
without electricity. A rainfall of 7:22
inches at Hot Springs from Sunday
midnight today had flooded streets
and cause damage estimated at sev
eral thousand dollars.
In Little Rock, the almost inces
sant downpour of rain from early
yezterday to this morning established
a record for any December day at
5:87 inches,
A storm sewer caved in, plunging
a railroad switch engine and two hox
cars 18 feet to its bottom here. No
one was injured. !
