AUTO ACCIDENT
§l° HAZARDS RISING
" WASHINGTON, December 29—
(#)—The hazard of death in automo
bile accidents is rising rapidly in the
United States, the national confer
ence on street and highway safety
said today in issuing statistics show
ing that one person was killed in
1925 for every 923 automobiles in
service.
Automobile deaths for the year
were 21,627, exclusive of fatalities
occurting when cars were in col
lision with agtomcpiles }tegiste}ed
wasg; 19,964,347, 5
“Emphasis should be constai\tly
given to the fact that the death rate
from automobile accidents is in
creasing rapidly year after year,”
the conference statement said, “and
that the street hazard for everyone
is becoming greater and greater.
Better regulations must be enacted
and enforced and better safety cam
paigns must be carried cn.”
In New York state, ocne person
was killed for every 731 automobiles
registered, while in Florida, though
the total number of decaths wag
smaller, the killing'rate was one per
), dan-for each 597 cars. Towa, at the
; ipthet end of the scale, was charged
with only one death for every 2,190
cax; registered. »
Not too much reliance was to be
placed in these comparative figures
the statement pcinted out, since the
number of visiting foreign cars, and
the mileage of vehicles operated
rather than the number of machines
registered in a single state, was to
be taken as the true test of hazard.

the Circle Theatre Thursday. Gaston
Glass and Alice Calhoun have been

'chosen by Louig Chaudet, the di

There are Joseph Girard, as Dan
Blake, a civilized man of the world,
who becomes a beast under the mys
terious strain of the nortinern mad
ness; Al Roscoe as Captain Van
Horn, skipper of a whaling ship; T.
Kohai, as an Eskimo chieftain:
Frank Baker, as the- brutal first
mate of the whaler and Al Ferguson
as Cole, a whaling mariner. In ad
dition, there are a band of native
Eskimos and a pack of savage
i' “huskies” brought down from Nome.
" The story is especially timely in
view of the recent Polar expeditions
and every effort was made to pre
sent the scenes with a stark realism.
The old whaler, frozen in for the
long winter, with a vast expanse of
ice stretching out o nall sides, is re
’ vealed with striking accuracy as to
l details, even showing the ice clinging
| to the masts in heavier formation on
the north than on the south. Such
Jittle details were watched carefully
by Chadet.
