A Word To
The Wise
"Owe no man anything, but to love one another: for he
that loveth another hath fulfilled the law." (Romans 13:8)
(KJV)
When I was young, I would always hear my mom and dad
use the phrase "A word to the wise". This was generally
used to warn us about a choice we were about to make. It
was to make us think about the positive as well as the nega
tive consequences of our decision.
This phrase has influenced my life to look at the effects of
words on individuals. It is hoped that through this ongoing
column that the words will influence everyone to positive
action and thinking.
The first "word to the wise" is love. Paul reminds us that
we as individuals have a debt to love one another as God
has loved us and mankind. In the original language of the
New Testament, the Greeks used four words to describe
love. The first word was eros or sexual, fleshly love which
requires reciprocation. The second word for love was fa
milial love or the love within a family which is also recip
rocal love. The third word for love is brotherly love or the
love between siblings or friends. It is also a reciprocal love,
but the word that Jesus chose to use is AGAPE, uncondi
tional love. It is a love that does not demand reciprocation
but is a love given to a person despite who they are, and
because God is love.
Agape love, or divine love is the love God demonstrated
on the cross with the death of Jesus Christ. Christ died for
us while we were yet sinners, and we were incapable of
returning that love at His death. The death of Christ was
motivated by the love of God because God's very nature is
love.
Our challenge today is to love like God loves. Love each
other and mankind unconditionally. Because God is in the
Christian we are to be motivated by love in our thinking, in
our speech, and in our behavior towards God and others.
Owe no man anything but love. Let the love of God be
shown through you today by doing a random act of kind
ness, speak an encouraging word to lift somebody up, or
transform an evil thought about someone to a positive one
by love. After you have done these things see how much
better you feel, and how much the better the world is, be
cause you chose to be motivated by love. God bless you!

"A Tree & Its Fruit"
1 John 2:6 - “The one who says he abides in Jesus should
walk just as he walked.”
Living in the Bible Belt, everyone knows something about
God. Many of the people I meet will tell me that they be
lieve in God, pray, and attend church. Most of them will
even say that they believe in Jesus, but there is a difference
between claiming to know Jesus and walking with Him.
What’s the difference?
In this year’s College Football Playoff, Ohio State and
Georgia played in the college football playoff semifinal, the
Peach Bowl. After the game, Ohio State’s coach told report
ers that his team deserved to win, while Georgia’s coach
told reporters that his team deserved to lose. Both coaches
were right, but even Ohio State played well enough to win
and Georgia played poorly enough to lose, that's not how
the game turned out. How do we know who won? The evi
dence of victory was the final score, 42-41 Georgia.
You can miss any ball game and go up to the players and
coaches from both teams after the game to ask them who
played the best and who deserved to win, but the score tells
the story. The evidence proves the truth.
What’s the difference between claiming to know Jesus and
walking with Him?
The score, the evidence tells the tmth. The Bible calls the
evidence of walking with Jesus, spiritual fruit. Galatians
5:22-23 says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and
self-control. The law is not against such things.” The fruit of
the Spirit is evidence in someone’s of the Holy Spirit living
in them and working in them.
I have a friend who says, “I’m nobody’s judge, but I am
a fruit inspector!” Jesus told a parable one time about fruit
trees and this parable is found in Matthew 7:15-20. Jesus
said that we are recognized by our fruit - “Are grapes gath
ered from thombushes or figs from thistles? In the same
way, every good tree produces good fruit, but a bad tree
produces bad fruit.” What kind of fruit is hanging on the
branches of your life? You can claim to be a fig tree but if all
you have is thorns, you're not a fig tree, you’re a thombush.
What fruit is evident in your life? Are you walking with
Jesus? Is the fruit of the Spirit evident in your life?
