The JCHS Class
of 1954 Luncheon
Honoring Joyce

Nina Terrell, Special Contributor
for
The Times
The JCHS Class of 1954
met Saturday, April 15th,
at Round's on Winthrope
Restaurant in Millen to
honor their teacher and
friend, Joyce Hearn Gay.
They adopted her as one
of their own a long time
ago. A sozen red roses
were presented to Joyce
with love and appreciation
for the many things she
has done with and for the
class through the years. It
was a special time for this
class to continue to bond
as friends and remember
our upbringing in a special
time and place.
Ten members of the
class were there: Chairman
Nina Beth Sheppard
Terrell (from Macon),
Lynn Jackson Davis (from
Alpharetta), Leroy Clayton
(Millen), Betty Sue James
Bunton (from Yulee,
Florida), Gene Sampson
(from Thomasville),
Franklin Toole (from
Augusta), Wayne Roberts
(from Ormond Beach,
Florida) Carolyn Hooks
Smith (from Box Springs),
Velma Saxon Joyner
(Millen), and Sallie
Bennett Clark (Millen).
There were another ten
more family and friends
with them. Pat Becton
and her daughter (from
Augusta representing our
member Billy). This class
has met every year since
the 5th reunion, except
for the recent couple of
Covid restrictive years.
Jean Cowart (in memory
of Phil, a very active
reunion planner) helped
to make the arrangements
with appropriate flowers
and seating. She read the
letters to the class from 4
members who could not
be there, yearbooks and
pictures were shared and
new lists were available.
Out of the original 50
graduates, 18 are still
living. (Only one is lost:
Emily Lewis Holland).
There were many hugs,
being glad to see each
other after an extended
time apart. The regular
reunion time in the past has
been the first weekend in
October to coincide with
the Fair on the Square,
so many members were
asking if the class could
meet again in the fall.
