The July meeting of the Jenkins County Commissioners was anything
but routine. With over 200 concerned citizens in attendance, the hot
topic was the proposed expansion of the landfill. Chairperson Horace
Weathersby announced, “because there are not three commissioners
physically in attendance at this meeting, nothing may be voted
on. However, we welcome comments from our citizens.” The only
commissioners present were Horace Weathersby and Hiller Spann.
Commissioner Jonathon Powell attended virtually.
Up for discussion was the Solid Waste Management Plan, which “has
not been updated since the 1990’s,” Weathersby began. The plan update
was written to comply with the Rules of See LANDFILL page 4

The July spotlight for the Woman’s Club Civic

native Tamia Lovett. Tammy is a lifelong resident
of Jenkins County. She is employed with Planters
Electric Membership Corporation and the Jenkins
County School System.
Tammy is very active within the community. She
was voted Citizen of the Year for Jenkins County in
2020. She was elected to serve on the Chamber of
Commerce Board in 2023. On some football Friday
nights, Tammy can be found in the concession stand
fulfilling local and out of town folks with the joy of
mouthwatering food and drinks.
A fun fact about Tammy is that she has a bucket list.
One item on her list is to visit what was once “Black
Wall Street” located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Tammy
also wants the superpower to be able to read minds
so that she can experience the feelings of others.
When asked what volunteering for her community
means to her Tammy said, “Volunteering has physical
and mental rewards such as your mood and emotions.
When you help others, it just makes you feel good
about yourself. Giving is two-fold, for both the giver
and the recipient.”
Tammy has three children Reginald, Rhonda, and
Raphael, daughter in law Dr. Kimberly Sapp Griffin
and one grandchild Ryan Griffin.
