5th Annual Bible Reading
By Pastor Brad Asbury,
Special Contributor
for
The Times
On July 14 th , at 7:00 AM at the Jenkins County
Courthouse, members of the community showed up for
the 5 th annual 7/14 Statewide Bible Reading. Jerri Tuck,
who resides in Bleckley County Georgia, has organized the
annual event each year and is the founder of the event in
the state of Georgia. Each year she enlists volunteers from
every county and assigns a passage of Scripture ensuring
that the entire Bible is read during the gatherings. This
season residents of Jenkins County read from 1 Samuel.
The foundation of the Statewide Bible Reading is from
2 Chronicles 7:14 which states, “ 14 If my people who are
called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek
my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear
from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
Out of the 159 counties in the state of Georgia, every
county participated in this year’s Bible reading. In addition
to the state of Georgia, 21 other states participated on
this day and those included Alabama, Alaska, Arizona,
California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa,
Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina,
Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin,
and Wyoming. While this was taking place in the United
States, countries around the world also participated this
year. Those included Aruba, Australia, Austria, Bolivia,
Brazil, Canada, Chile, Cuba, El Salvador, Ethiopia, France,
Germany, Ghana, Greece, Haiti, India, Israel, Kenya,
Liberia, Malawi, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Paraguay,
South Africa, Switzerland, Uganda, United Kingdom, USA,
Venezuela, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe.

Hallelujah,
We Shall
Rise
By Sam Eades, Publisher/Writer
for
The Times
Another favorite hymn of my Grandmother Mary was.
"Hallelujah, we shall rise." I think more than anything,
she liked the upbeat music and many of the words in the
song. I do know, but, when they sang this hymn at the old
methodist Church in Cobbham, Georgia, she would sing
to the top of her lungs and you could actually hear her
through the windows of the Church. Although she never
mentioned it, I really think she loved good ole southern
gospel music, just like the rest of the family.
It was in that little country Church that I heard this
hymn for the very first time.
"Hallelujah, we shall rise" is a song filled with a
message of hope about the future. It does resonate with all
of us concerned with the state of affairs in the world today.
A world full of violence and misery.
The writer and author of this hymn is John Edmond
Thomas, born in December of 1860. His father died when
he was only fourteen and being the oldest son, he had to
step up and work to take care of the family.
Despite all of this, he managed to attend a vocal
school at the age of
seventeen. Thomas would
go on to become a music
composer and publisher.
Later in life, he, along with
Franklin Eiland and John
Greer founded the Trio
Music company in 1890.
Mr. Thomas died on
April 30, 1946 at the age of
86.
To me, this hymn
reminds each of us to, look
forward to that future when
the dead in Christ shall rise.
And we will be forever with
Jeuus in paradise. Come on a sing with me
John Edmond Thomas
In that Resurrection morning
When the trumpet of God shall sound
We shall rise, (hallelujah) we shall rise.
Then the saints will come rejoicing and
no tears will e’er be found
We shall rise, (hallelujah) we shall rise.
We shall rise, (hallelujah) we shall rise (amen)
We shall rise, (hallelujah)
In that Resurrection morning
when these prison bars are broken
We shall rise, (hallelujah) we shall rise.
In that Resurrection morning
when the shades of life has fled
We shall rise, (hallelujah) we shall rise.
In the day of glory dawning when the sea
gives up His dead
We shall rise, (hallelujah) we shall rise.
I shall see my blessed Savior
who so freely died for me
We shall rise, (hallelujah) we shall rise.
And our fathers and our mothers and our
loved ones we shall see
We shall rise, (hallelujah) we shall rise.
FIRE

the social hall. The fire departments successfully gained
control of the fire and additional firefighting units on scene
extinguished additional hot spots.
A caretaker of the church, Webster Frawley, explained to
Chief Dwayne Herrington with the Millen Fire Department,
“I was in the process of purging air from the propane gas
lines when the fumes suddenly ignited and started the fire.”
Investigators believe a nearby refrigerator possibly ignited
the propane when the compressor cycled on.
Scarboro Baptist Church was constituted in 1854. The
first recorded minister was Rev. J.M. Cross (1880-1883).
Perry Hearn, minister at Scarboro Baptist Church said,
“For the foreseeable future we will be meeting on Sunday
mornings only at 11 a.m. in the covered pavilion behind
the church.” Pastor Hearn explained the social hall was a
total loss and the historical building, the sanctuary, suffered
smoke damage. “We would like to thank the emergency
personnel and all the fire departments that responded to
save our church. We have received an outpouring of love
and concern from our community. We are all truly blessed
to live in Jenkins County.” Scarboro Baptist Church is one
of the area’s oldest churches.
