PEACHES
Continued from page 1
ice cream, and peach tea are just a few of the South's favorites that come to mind when
thinking about this beautiful, fuzz-coated fruit. Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting with
my friend, Linda Newton, at Ogeechee Peaches in Millen, Georgia.
Mrs. Linda and her husband, Rodney, began their peach tree journey approximately
twenty years ago and admit that it was much of a learning curve for them when they began.
They now take joy in growing fifteen different varieties of peaches through the months of
May to August.
During this season of harvest, they collect around six cases of peaches per tree which is
equal to about twenty-five pounds per case. Unfortunately, the peach crop took a major hit
this year due to the inconsistent weather pattern we've experienced here in South Georgia.
Mrs. Linda reports having lost approximately ninety percent of this year's peach crop.
Thankfully, peaches aren't the only fruit they take pride in growing. Others include but
are not limited to nectarines, muscadines, blackberries, and seasonal vegetables. Ogeechee
Peaches can be found at the Statesboro Farmers Market as well as three others in Georgia. It's
important to note that when you
are wanting to make a purchase
that you should get in line early
as they report typically selling out
within the first hour of opening. (I
think that screams the love of all
their homegrown deliciousness!)
Check them out & make
your way to your kitchen. A
summertime treat is well-
deserved.
Peach Trifle
• '/2 of a sour cream pound
cake
• 6 peeled and sliced ripe
peaches (Reserve a few slices for
topping)
• 3 cups half and half
• 2 pkgs of French Vanilla instant pudding
• 1 tsp real vanilla
• 1 can sweetened condensed milk
• !4 cup lemon juice
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 1 large container of Cool Whip
• Trifle dish or your favorite glass bowl
1. Whip together half & half and pudding mixes until blended well. Let sit for 10 minutes.
It will be thick. Add the can of sweetened condensed milk until the mixture looks creamy.
Add Cool Whip and beat for 3 minutes. Meanwhile take the peeled peaches and try your best
not to eat the whole bowl. Add the lemon juice and sugar in a bowl and it sit aside until you
get ready to assemble the trifle. I use lemon juice to keep the peaches from turning brown.
2. Cube your pound cake, and yes — use the crumbs, too!

On June 10, 2023, Girl Scouts Troop # 27402 departed from Augusta, Georgia, to
participate in a special and unique bridging ceremony in Savannah, Georgia. Girl Scouts of
Historic Georgia invited Girl Scouts from all over the United States to participate in “Bridging
Savannah’s Bridge”. The Girl Scouts crossed over the Talmadge Bridge as a physical and
symbolic transition from Daisy to Brownie, Brownie to Junior, Junior to Cadette, Cadette
to Senior, Senior to Ambassador, and Ambassador to Adult. Bridging ceremonies give Girl
Scouts the opportunity to celebrate themselves; connect with other Girl Scouts and reflect
on their history. After the bridging ceremony, the scouts gathered for lunch and shopped at
the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia Girl Center on East Liberty Street, visited a variety of
vendors, then journeyed to the historic home of Juliette Gordon Low, founder of Girl Scouts,
and the First Girl Scout Headquarters in the United States.

The Ogeechee River Railroad Depot
Recently, in June of
2023, Ogeechee River
fisherman, Mark Vick, of
Guyton, Georgia, fished
the river recently and had
a good morning, despite
the rising water. He and his
friend David Brodmann
kept 15 nice redbreasts, a
bluegill and a catfish. They
caught a bunch of fish but
only kept the biggest. Their
hot Satilla Spin colors were
bumblebee (black/yellow)
and crawfish. It was the
first time his friend had
ever fished the Ogeechee,
and he caught his first
redbreast during the trip.
Their big channel catfish
ate the crawfish-colored
spinnerbait rigged on a
5-foot ultralight outfit, and
it took a while to land it.
However, after struggling
for a while, they landed
this grand fish.
The water has been
up for a while due to the
heavy rains that have hit
the area lately. It looks as
if this week, we have more
rain coming. Remember to
fish near the banks. This is
where the fish are staying
while the water of the
river is getting so high.Or
at least they are trying to
get under brush and tree
logs so they can stay clear
of any alligator's nearby.

adults, so everyone has a chance to win. The final weekly drawing will be on Saturday, July
22.
Speaking of fun stuff to get, please remember if you or your children have won a weekly
drawing or have earned prizes, make sure that you pick them up on or before Saturday,

Before the end of Summer Reading, though, we have two great events here at the library.
First up on Tuesday, July 18 at 2 pm, we have the folks from Magnolia Springs State Park
coming to talk about the amazing park we have just outside of Millen.
Then comes the big finale of the Summer Reading Program - Didgeridoo Down Under
will be coming to the library at 2 pm on Tuesday, July 25! You’ll enjoy the unique music
of the didgeridoo, one of Australia’s most fascinating instruments, as well as learning about
Australia, its animals, and its people. This program was sponsored by Planters EMC, Susan
Welch and the Rotary Club of Millen.
The end of the Summer Reading Program doesn’t mean the end of the fun, though! We
have a brand new service available for you to use with your electronic devices - Kanopy!
Kanopy is a streaming service available through your library which has a ton of great
movies, series, and documentaries, plus children’s movies and shows and even video story
readings. To get on Kanopy, just go to sjrls.kanopy.com and sign up with your library card,
