"Recharging our
Batteries"
Horses cannot run all day without occasionally stopping
to eat grass and drink water. Factories schedule regular
shutdowns to do maintenance on the machinery and keep
everything in working condition. On the job, workers
get fifteen-minute breaks as well as a lunch break. When
people have the opportunity, they take a day off to spend
time at the river, play golf or go shopping.
As we study the life of Jesus, we see him spending a lot of
time with people teaching, preaching, helping, and healing
but we also see Jesus getting away from the noise to rest,
relax and refresh his mind to renew his strength. The
Disciples knew the places where Jesus liked to get away
to pray. Before sunrise, Jesus often spent time in prayer.
"Now in the morning, having risen a long while before
daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and
there He prayed," (Mark 1:35).
When the Disciples returned from an important mission
weary from their journey, Jesus called them aside to recover
their strength and presence of mind to be more effective in
the future. "Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told
Him all things, both what they had done and what they had
taught. And He said to them, 'Come aside by yourselves
to a deserted place and rest a while.' For there were many
coming and going, and they did not even have time to
eat. So, they departed to a deserted place in the boat by
themselves," (Mark 6:30-32).
We don't have to eat properly or rest but it's easier to think
clearly, be kind and deal with difficult situations when we
take time for food and rest. When the Prophet Elijah was
weary and depressed, the Lord told him to eat and rest.
Then he was fully prepared for the next big events in his
life. "Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly
an angel touched him, and said to him, 'Arise and eat.' Then
he looked, and there with his head was a cake baked on
coals, and ajar of water. So, he ate and drank, and lay down
again," (1 Kings 19:5-6).

Pine Straw
Scammers Causing
Financial Woes
Bv Joe Brady, Editor

The Times
Screven County - Homeowners in South Georgia find
themselves once again falling victim to a wave of pine
straw scams, leaving them in financial distress. However,
it's not just the residents who are being affected; legitimate
businesses are facing repercussions as well.
The local law enforcement urges residents to remain
vigilant and cautious when approached by individuals
offering pine straw services. The scammers are posing as
legitimate businesses, knocking on doors, and offering to
lay pine straw
at a certain
price. However,
once the service
is completed,
they drastically
raise the
price, leaving
homeowners
shocked and
exploited.
According
to the Sheriffs
Office, the key
to handling
such situations
is to maintain
thorough documentation of every interaction with the
service providers, as it could later turn into a civil matter.
As these scammers impersonate established businesses,
it becomes harder for authorities to track them down and
bring them to justice.

Mitch Mitchell, the owner of Mitchell's Pine Straw,
a reputable company with over 12 years of experience,
spoke out about the issue. He emphasized that legitimate
businesses rarely resort to cold calling for new clients.
Therefore, any unsolicited approach should raise a red flag
for potential customers.
"We don't cold call people. Our business thrives on word
of mouth and references from satisfied customers. That's a
crucial indicator of a legitimate business," stated Mitchell,
cautioning homeowners to be vigilant about unsolicited
service offers.

“Sunlight”
Psalm 34:8 - Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.
Here’s the $10 word of the day - phototropism.
Phototropism is the scientific term for plants turning
toward sunlight. Place a plant in a pot or in the ground, and
it will turn toward sunlight. Even mature plants have been
shown to turn toward sunlight. This fantastic phenomenon
occurs when plants elongate the cells in the stem that is
furthest from the light. Plants literally stretch themselves
toward the sun. Why? Because they cannot live without
sunlight - it is their source of sustenance, growth, and
reproduction.
Just like plants are made to stretch toward the sunlight,
we were created to long for God. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says
that God “has put eternity into man's heart”. What this
means is that we are eternal beings with an eternal thirst
for God, and we go through life trying to fit things in the
eternal space that only God can fill. Because of the reality
of sin, our souls are like 5-gallon buckets with small holes
in the bottom - you can fill up the bucket, but it doesn’t
stay full. This is why the Psalmist says, “Taste and see that
the Lord is good!” God is what we long for!
Psalm 34:8 goes on to say, “Blessed is the man who
takes refuge in Him!” Refuge means “to flee to” or literally
to run towards. If dumb plants know their need for sun
and stretch toward the sunlight, how much more do we as
humans created in the image of God need to run toward
Him? We need God more than all the plants on Earth need
the sun. He is the only thing that satisfies our souls for all
eternity.
Taste and see that the Lord is good - like a child tasting
ice cream for the first time and saying “More, more, more!”
Take one step toward God and you will find that you want
to take another. Consider the plants, and learn from them
- they feel their need, they feel the source that abundantly
meets their need, and they move toward it!
