Eagles fly very high
and live a long life. An
eagle can fly as high as an
airplane and sometimes
look down on a storm cloud.
Eagles fly 10,000 feet high
or higher. Many eagles
live thirty years which is
generally longer than most
other birds. Their average
flying speed is about forty
miles per hour, and they
often fly eighty miles per
hour when they swoop
down to catch a rabbit or
a fish or something else to
eat. How do eagles breathe
at such high altitudes? Our
Creator designed a dense
network of blood vessels
in their wing muscles
which distributes oxygen
throughout their bodies.
We may not be able to
fly like an eagle, but the
Lord wants us to set high
standards for living in this
world like John the Baptist
did. He provided an
outstanding example and
challenged his generation
to turn away from sin to
the Savior, the Lord Jesus
Christ. Jesus spoke about
John standing head and
shoulders above others by
his way of life. "Assuredly,
I say to you, among those
bom of women there
has not risen one greater
than John the Baptist..."
(Matthew 11:11).
The secret of John's
sterling character was not

in himself. The key was
John humbling himself
before God. On a consistent
basis, John emphasized
the greatness of Christ
and pointed people to
Jesus at every opportunity.
Therefore, John said, "He
must increase, but I must
decrease. He who comes
from above is above all;
he who is of the earth is
earthly and speaks of the
earth. He who comes from
heaven is above all," (John
3:30-31). After John the
Baptist introduced the
Disciples to Jesus, then
he took a lesser role, but
he lived on a higher level
through humility.
If we want to join John
and other outstanding
believers in living above
the clouds, then we need to
admit our dependence on
God. Then the Lord helps
us soar like an eagle. "He
gives power to the weak,
and to those who have
no might He increases
strength. Even the youths
shall faint and be weary,
and the young men shall
utterly fall, but those who
wait on the LORD shall
renew their strength; They
shall mount up with wings
like eagles, they shall ran
and not be weary. They
shall walk and not faint,"
(Isaiah 40:29-31).

“Honey or
Vinegar”
Philippians 4:5 - “Let your reasonableness be
known to everyone. The Lord is at hand;”
There was a deacon in my church growing up named
Frank Brantley who was a wise old man. Every chance
that he got to speak in church he would always share
this phrase, “Remember, you can catch more flies with
honey than with vinegar.” I’ll always remember Mr.
Frank saying that. His point in sharing that phrase with
us was to teach us to apply honey to problem situations
instead of vinegar.
Applying honey means being reasonable or gentle
in place of becoming angry or irritated. This is what
Paul is writing to the Philippian church in Phillipians
4:5. Be reasonable, be gentle in your relationships
and interactions - because the Lord is at hand!
Remembering the Lord is at hand helps us in two
ways. First, we remember that God is present with us
to see how we will treat others. In our interactions with
others, the words we say, the attitude we have, and the
actions we take will all be accountable before God
one day. Second, we need to remember that the Lord
is reasonable and gentle with us. Psalm 103:8,10 says,
““The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and
abounding in steadfast love... “He does not deal with
us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our
iniquities.” The Lord does not treat us as we deserve to
be treated - He treats us better!
If God can treat us better than we deserve to be
treated, we can treat others better than they deserve
to be treated. I have tried to consistently put Mr.
Frank’s words into action and apply honey to problem
situations and problem people, while remembering that
I can be a problem myself sometimes too! Remember
Mr. Frank’s words this week, “You can catch more
flies with honey than with vinegar.” Apply honey to
those problems you are faced with this week and see if
it produces good results.
