Longsuffering
"I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye
walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called. With
all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing,
one another in love; Endeavoring to keep the unity of the
Spirit in the bond of peace." (Ephesians 4:1-3).
We live in a time where no matter what you say, do, or have
good intentions, many are offended or make themselves
victims. We are in the victim age and if you disagree, you
are automatically an enemy so there is no discourse to bring
everyone to peace.
Paul found similar problems in the Church. Paul in his
Epistle to the Ephesians, strives to teach what it means to be
in Christ and for the Church to work together in unity. This
same message needs to be heard by Americans. Americans
need to come together and talk, leave their politics at
the door, and act like adults who can carry on a peaceful
conversation that may result in unity and hopefully heal our
nation and find solutions to our divisions.
One of Paul's suggestions is to be longsuffering. The
word longsuffering in the Greek comes from the Greek
word makrothumia which means long tempered or patient.
This suggestion, that no doubt would work, is quite the
opposite of people today who are short-tempered and want
immediate results which are not reality. Problems which
have been smoldering for years or maybe decades cannot
be solved immediately.
The answer, today, is given to us by Paul. We must
practise patience, self-control, and be willing to be
longsuffering. We must be willing to show patience in
spite of troubles caused by people or institutions. This may
mean that people who truly want solutions, or the healing of
our nation may have to patiently endure the lasting offense
or hardship. We must learn to be long tempered.
Then, we must understand that the answer will not
happen overnight. Our trouble today is we are used to fast
service. We wanted everything yesterday. We are willing
to pay more for shipping so a package will arrive the next
day, rather than save money by being patient or be willing
to wait for gratification.
For every problem there is a solution. A proper
solution can only happen if a person knows all the facts,
all the options, all the alternatives, and looks for a future
accomplishment or result. Let's accept the challenge to
develop the characteristics of long-suffering, patience, and
self-control. We will find out that we can bring about unity
in our families, our churches, our communities, and our
country. Let us all be the voice of reason, open-mindedness,
and willingness to be a part of the solution rather than
adding to the problem.

A Seed
From
The Sower
-Michael Guido
Years ago, it was a heart-wamiing experience for me
to take my wife and sons to visit my childhood home.
With some hesitation I knocked on the door. The new
owners remembered me and invited us in.
We began our tour in the living room, then went into
the dining room and eventually the kitchen. We walked
upstairs and paused in my childhood bedroom before
visiting the attic. Then we went to the basement. Though
there had been some changes, many things remained
the same. Walking through my “original home” brought
back many memories that flooded my heart. There were
tears of joy mixed with tears of sadness as I thought of
my family.
As we returned to the car, I began to think of the many
different “homes” I’d lived in since my parents died.
The final number was rather staggering but not unusual
for most people. A recent census study revealed that the
average American will live in 11.7 different “homes.”
Psalm 90 begins with the word “Lord” referring to
our God as a sovereign God who is our eternal shelter
- our dwelling place. Moses used the same words in
Deuteronomy when he wrote, “the eternal God is your
dwelling place.” He told the Israelites that God was
then and would always be their “home” - their refuge no
matter where they were - whether in the wilderness or
in the promised land. Home is not a place but a Person.
This same Lord is the eternal God who will become
the eternal shelter and refuge for all who accept His Son.
