Let the Celebration Begin
SCMS boys lose to Portal
-Coach Brad Asbury
In 1981, the Georgia Bulldogs
raised the banner on a College
Football National Champion
ship. Since then, fans have
watched as year after the year
the Bulldogs would get close
to another National Champion
ship; however, ever year they
have ended the season saying,
“Next year will be our year.”
On Monday night, before a
crowd of over 70,000, the
Georgia Bulldogs ended a 41-
year draught and defeated the
Alabama Crimson Tide and won
the coveted National Champion
ship.
The game was close through
out with neither defense willing
to give in. Alabama struck first
in the game with a field goal
of 37 yards to take a 3-0 lead,
and the game would remain that
way until the end of the first
quarter. With 12:35 left in the
second quarter Georgia kicker.
Jack Podlensky kicked in a 24-
yard field goal to tie the game.
The second quarter would be
an exchanging of field goals.
Alabama would score on a
field goal with 11:13 and 7:07
remaining in the quarter. Will
Reichard, the Alabama kicker
was 3 for 3 from field goals,
with his longest at 45 yards in
the first half. Georgia would
get another offensive drive in
the half and would be left with
a 49-yard field goal that would
bring the score at halftime to
9-6.
The third quarter final saw the
first touchdown of the game.
Georgia running back Zamir
White pushed in a 1-yard touch
down run after an eighty-yard
drive by the Bulldogs. Georgia
had taken a small lead. Yet, it
was short lived. As the fourth
quarter started, Alabama cut the
lead to one on yet another field
goal. However, after a contro
versial call, which was a fumble
by Georgia, Alabama would
have a short 16-yard drive for
touchdown taking a 18-13 lead.
While I am sure many felt at
that point that it was going to be
another, “There is always next
year,” moment, the Bulldogs
would score three touchdowns
to close out the game. With
8:09 left, the Bulldogs took the

lead and never looked back.
The game was sealed with 54
seconds left in the game when
Kelee Ringo intercepted, and
Alabama pass and he took that
interception all the way in for a
touchdown.
The final score was Georgia 33
and Alabama 18. The celebra
tions empted in Indianapolis
and all over Georgia. Scenes
from the University of Geor
gia showed celebrations in the
streets all over Athens. Fans had
waited for that one moment,
some had waited their whole
life. Quarterback Stetson Ben-
net, who is a native of Black-
shear, GA was named game
MVP.
The state of Georgia has had a
lot to celebrate this past year in
sports. The Atlanta Braves won
the World Series in November,
and now the Georgia Bulldogs
have won the College Football
National Championship in 2022.
Fans will continue their celebra
tion on Saturday in Athens as
the team returns home with a
parade through the city!
