Feeling Salty?
Of course, you
are!!
Neighbors, salt, a common mineral that has been a staple
in human diets for centuries, is often a common point of
contention regarding our health. Chemically known as
sodium chloride, salt is crucial in transmitting electrical
signals throughout the body, facilitating nerve function,
muscle contractions, and fluid balance. Nerve cells rely
on sodium ions to generate and transmit electrical signals,
allowing us to think, move, or tell a joke. If you were to
compliment someone as being "salt of the earth." They
could rightly say, "Oh, that's just your salt talking."
One of salt's significant functions is its role in regulating
fluid balance. Sodium attracts water which the body uses to
move and maintain fluid balances. The body also uses water
to maintain the sodium level in the blood and cells within
strict parameters. So it is not your imagination if you think
your ankles look a little swollen after eating a whole bag
of salty boiled peanuts at the Friday night football game. It
will take a good bit of that tea you drank to keep the blood
salt level at the proper dilution until all that excess can be
excreted into the urine for you to spend the rest of the night
making trips to the bathroom.
Truly salt is an indulgence as our body only needs to take
in a small amount daily for normal operation. Excessive salt
leads to higher blood volumes, and the body must retain
fluid to maintain the proper blood dilution of salt. The
higher blood volume of fluids will place extra pressure on
blood vessels and workload on the heart. Consequently, it
is unsurprising that high salt in the diet is associated with
cardiovascular disease. Conversely, reducing salt intake can
help lower blood pressure in individuals with hypertension.
Unfortunately, many processed and packaged foods
contain high levels of hidden salt, contributing to elevated
sodium consumption in modem diets and, much to our
demise, in the southern kitchen, salt use is second only
to shortening, butter, and mayonnaise. Being mindful of
food labels and opting for fresh, whole foods can aid in
maintaining a healthy balance of salt intake.
