CELEBRATING 100 YEARS from 7
for 27 years. Buddie and Harold were
parents to three children. Susan was the first
child, bom in Texas, Richard was bom in
Boston, and Dana was bom in Kentucky.
Mrs. Charles’ most memorable times, she
said, were during their life after WWII and
Harold’s graduation, because it felt like that
was when life really began. She speaks
highly of their children, grandchildren, and
great grandchildren. Her grandson Abraham
lives in the Netherlands and works for
Google. Her other grandson, T.J., also works
for Google and lives here in Carrollton.
Christina, her granddaughter lives in
Washington D.C., where she works for the
Department of Education. Her grandson
Sean, works for Georgia Power and lives in
Atlanta. She has one great-granddaughter
and is expecting two more.
The one piece of advice Buddie would
like to share is always tell the truth and
always keep your promises. She says the
secret to living a long life is to be friendly,
caring, and to just keep living.
“The best part of living to be 100 years old

Fan voting first narrowed the field, and
then a panel of judges consisting of members
of the music industry cast votes, and Hunter

is being here to see my great granddaughter.
The worst part of being 100 is the lack of
energy,” laughed Buddie.
A report published by the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),
noted the nation’s centenarian population has
grown by 44 percent. Some experts believe
such longevity is the result of good health
and great genes coupled with a fair amount
of luck.
Societal factors also contribute. Such
factors include improvements in vaccines,
medications, hygiene and sanitation. The
report noted: “People are more aware of
their health, of the importance of staying
active and eating healthy food,” as also
having an impact on longevity.
A review of census data showed that over
80% of America’s centenarians were female.
Gary Small, a Professor on Aging and
Director of the UCFA Fongevity Center,
explained the phenomenon this way, “We
know that women are more social than men.
Other studies have found that staying
socially connected predicts greater life
expectancy.
“If you are social, it may reduce stress
levels because you can talk about your
feelings and things that stress you out and it
seems to help many people. If you need a
ride to the doctor or you fall, they can take
you to the hospital or help you find the best
doctor.”
