REMEMBER TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PETS...
It’s hot, hot, hot outside... Any time your pets are
outside, make sure they have protection from
heat and sun and plenty of fresh, cold water. In
heat waves, add ice to water when possible. Tree
shade and tarps are ideal because they don't ob
struct air flow. A doghouse does not provide re
lief from heat - in fact, it makes it worse.

HPC Approves Two CO As for Downtown Signage
Economic Development Coordinator Smith Introduced to Commission
By Luke Haney
lhaney@upsonbeacon.com
The Historic Preservation
Commission for the City of
Thomaston met last Thursday
and approved two certificates
of appropriateness for down
town businesses, along with
discussions of downtown fa
cade paint colors and HPC by
laws.
To begin the meeting,
Chair Jane Burdette intro
duced Taylor Smith, who now
serves as the economic devel
opment coordinator for
Thomaston. Bom and raised
in Thomaston, Smith gradu
ated from the University of
West Georgia with a bach
elor’s degree in business man
agement and marketing and a
master’s degree in public ad
ministration. For the past few
years, Smith has worked in
Louisiana as a project coordi
nator for an affordable home
ownership program.
Smith says he is currently
in the process of acquiring
Rural Zone Designation for
the downtown district, which
offers state tax credits for job
creation, building acquisition,
and building rehabilitation;
working to have a Federal Op
portunity Zone in downtown;
and finalizing the tentative
downtown “master plan” for
the city’s approval.
“Expectations for the HPC
are going to expand and we
will meet more often,” com
mented Smith, who notes the
large amount of opportunity
in downtown Thomaston and
believes “in five years, we will
lookback and see a completely
different image of downtown.”
The HPC approved a COA
for Colby Salter, who owns
Colby & Co., located in down
town Thomaston. Salter re
ceived a COA at the last meet
ing for a three-foot by six-foot
sign to be placed above the
entry door of her business, but
revisited the commission with
representation from To The
Max Advertising to change the
request with a new contractor
and a sign that is five feet by 10
feet.
A COA was also approved
for Leigh Hunt, owner of Good
Boy Grooming, located in
downtown Thomaston, who
was also represented by To
The Max Advertising. After
presenting a 39-square-foot
sign to be placed above the
entry door and along the
width of the facade, members
reminded To The Max affili
ates that a sign in this district
cannot cover more than 10
percent of the entire facade,
which would make the maxi
mum possible dimensions
equal to 32 square feet. Hunt’s
request also included trans
lucent signage to be placed on
the glass front door.
An affiliate with To The
Max Advertising stated that he
was expecting the issue to
arise, and presented a second
option that covers 30 square
feet of the facade.
The COA was approved
with the condition that city
code enforcement officials
confirm that the sign meets
local code criteria.
In other news, the com
mission discussed plans to de
velop bylaws for the group,
discussed the commission’s
ability to question building fa
cade paint colors, and thanked
Julian Bethel, who owns 210
N. Hightower Street and was
present at the meeting, for
coming to the commission
and agreeing to change de
signs of his property to com
plement its surroundings.
Members of the Historic
Preservation Commission in
clude Chair Jane Burdette,
Jamesan Gramme, Brenda
Tabb, Lila Bryan, Tempy
Hoyal, Claude Burgess, Walter
Brown, and Jerry Adams. Lila
Bryan, Tempy Hoyal, and
Claude Burgess did not attend
the meeting.

When you talk to people
about being saved you often
hear the following words. They
say, they feel like they’re going to Heaven, they talk about
how they helped others, how they’ve been a good neigh
bor, how they have always paid their bills. Some talk
about their good family and how successful their children
are.
You hear all kinds of things when the question is
asked about being saved. It’s really a rare thing to hear
someone say they are born again, that Jesus is their Lord
and Savior, that Heaven is sounding sweeter all the time
and how their life changed when they got saved.
But, people talk about their church membership,
about being baptized, about what jobs they had in church.
The only real answer when you ask someone if they are
saved is yes, Jesus Christ has come into my heart and
what a joy it is to know without any doubt that Heaven is
waiting.
Some say, I hope or maybe I’ll get in or they’ll com
pare themselves with other people. The more you ask
about being saved the more different responses you’ll get.
If someone asked you if you were saved, what would
be your answer? Hell is real and the eternal risk is too
great not to have the right answer. The right answer is
Jesus.
