Left, family and friends of Susan Williams joined
together as Team Susan during the team lap at
Relay for Life. Williams, a longtime Dawson
County resident, lost her battle to cancer in
January, but thanks to the love of her family, her
message of turning "a mess into a message" will
always be heard. Above, purple ribbons decora
tions were on display, reminding everyone at
Relay for Life that the night was about hope for a
cure.

Public officials includ
ing Sheriff Jeff Johnson,
Dawsonville City
Councilman Jason
Power, Clerk of Courts
Justin Power, BOE mem
bers Roger Slaton and
Karen Armstrong, Tax
Commissioner Nicole
Stewart and
Representative Kevin
Tanner lined up, prepared
for pies to be flung at
their faces.
Before the “Pie in the
Face” began, Armstrong
was excited to volunteer
her face as a target for
the pies.
And after the pies
stopped flying,
Armstrong was all
smiles.
“It was a lot of fun,”
she said with a grin.
Rep. Kevin Tanner
wiped whipped cream
from his eyes and
described it as a “very
creamy experience.”
Young children,
encouraged by their par
ents, lined up in droves
and were eager for the
chance to pie public offi
cials.
Tiny tot Alena Sewell,
2, stole the show when
the “Pie in the Face” fun
draiser began as she
made her way to all the
public officials and gin
gerly placed her plate of
whipped cream on their
faces. The smiling tod
dler couldn’t contain her
happiness and came run
ning back with more and
more pies, causing the
gathered crowd and the
officials covered in
whipped topping to erupt
in laughter. Sewell also
grabbed a towel and
helped to wipe off Justin
Power’s face after she
pied him.
Six-year breast cancer
survivor Janice Blalock
couldn’t hold back her
laughter as she pied
every official in the line
up.
“It was a lot of fun and
it goes to a good cause,”
said Blalock.
It was Blalock’s fifth
year at Dawson County
Relay for Fife. She said
she was lucky to have
caught her cancer early
through her yearly mam
mogram, and stressed the
importance for all
women to get their yearly
mammogram as it can
save their life.
Northside Hospital was
the presenting level spon
sor for this year’s Relay
for Fife, and Dr. Farry
Anderson of Anderson
Family Medicine took
the stage to address the
crowd with an important
message to survivors.
“I applaud the courage
that it took for you to
recognize you know that
something was wrong
and to go through the
therapy and get it treat
ed,” said Anderson.
He added that the “See
something say some
thing” message he saw at
the Atlanta airport also
applies to early signs of
cancer.
“You’d be surprised at
how many cancers you
can see just by looking at
somebody. You can look
at granddad and say
‘That flaky thing on your
ear, you need to get it
looked at,’” said
Anderson. “We’re very
fortunate to live in a
county that has a great
deal of physicians that
are able to do early diag
nosis and initiate treat
ment. We have great
imaging centers for
MRIs, CTs, ultrasounds
and mammograms so
take advantage of those.”

Cyber
An update from the county
manager mid-week stated that
no critical or essential services
such as E911 or emergency
response were impacted by the
attack.
“County offices have
remained open as normal and,
under the circumstances, are
functioning well and continue
to serve the citizenry,” County
Manager David Headley said.
“At this time, no personnel
data or banking information is
believed compromised.
Employees will continue to be
paid as normal, and our teams
continue to work to fully
restore computer systems.”
The point of entry for the
attack has not been deter
mined.
The county does have a
cyber insurance policy in place
through the Association of
County Commissioners of
Georgia, but prior to Monday
it did not have an emergency
management plan in place for
a ransomware attack.
Shattuck also said that the
attack is similar to one the city
of Atlanta experienced in
March, which brought city ser
vices to a halt. The city has
spent millions of dollars in the
aftermath of the attack.
According to the U.S.
Department of Homeland
Security, there were more than
4,000 ransomware attacks on
average that occurred daily
since Jan. 1, 2016.
“This is a 300 percent
increase over the approximate
ly 1,000 attacks per day seen
in 2015,” the department said
in a memo.
The department advised iso
lating the infected computers,
securing backup data, contact
ing law enforcement and
changing passwords after
removing the system from the
affected network.
“Paying a ransom does not
guarantee an organization will
regain access to their data,”
according to the department,
which said some individuals or
organizations were never pro
vided with decryption keys
after paying the ransom.
Some victims were targeted
again, and others may get
asked to pay more than the
original ransom.
