If you are an eighth grad
er in Dawson County the
beginning of October
marked the end of three
seasons: football, volleyball
and summer. All three
ended in spectacular fash
ion.
Saturday, Sept. 29 was an
almost perfect summer day.
A slight breeze with a few
clouds kept the heat down
and served as a beautiful
backdrop for the 2018
eighth grade volleyball
tournament.
After finishing the regu
lar season with a 7-3
record, the Dawson County
Lady Tigers entered the
tournament as the number
two seed, earning a first-
round bye. The team
defeated Pickens County in
the second round to
advance to the champion
ship round where they ran
into a white-hot White
County.
“We faced White County
in the championship game
that was coming in with a
huge upset win over the
first seed Lumpkin County
team,” said Head Coach
Tina Brown. “White was
on fire and we were not!”
White County captured
the title in two sets placing
the Lady Tigers as second
overall in 2018.
“I am really proud of
these girls,” Brown said.
“They had an awesome
season and to finish second
in the season and in our
tournament is huge when
you consider that this is
only our second year to
have a middle school team.
I think these young ladies
will be a huge addition to
the high school program
next year.”
And Thursday, Sept. 27
featured the final regular
season game for the unde
feated eighth grade football
team. Having outscored
their opponents by an
astounding 226-20 in their
first five games, the young
men faced a strong
Dragons unit from Pickens
County.
Fighting hard through
four quarters of football,
the Dawson County Tigers
preserved their perfect sea
son with a final score of
34-25 to capture the first
seed and home field advan
tage in this year’s tourna
ment.
“This is my first year
being a head coach at any
level and I couldn’t be luck
ier to have the group of
boys I have,” said Head
Coach Trevor Duba. “They
are extremely talented.”
The eighth grade team
will take on the White
County Warriors in their
first play-off game under
coach Duba at Tiger
Stadium on Oct 3.

Senior running back Ahmad Kamara scores the first of three rushing touch
downs against the Vikings Sept. 28.
FROM 1B
Football
the game from their own 25-yard line.
East Hall ran a quick five plays to move
the ball 17 yards for what would be their
longest drive of the night until late in
the fourth quarter.
In an absolutely dominating display of
defense, the Dawson County Tigers
lived in the Vikings backfield for the
entire game. By the end of the night the
unit had sacked Man a total of seven
times, racked up an additional 14 tack
les for loss, a safety, and held the
Vikings to a total of eight yards rushing
without allowing them to cross the 50
yard line until their last drive of the
game.
After allowing the longest Viking play
of the game, a 57-yard pass and catch
along the sidelines late in the fourth
quarter, the Tigers second-string defense
buckled down on the two yard line to
throw the Vikings back and preserve the
shut-out.
Led by senior quarterback Vaughn
Clark, who finished 4-4 with 80 yards
passing and a touchdown while also
gaining 32 yards with his legs, Tigers
offense took full advantage of their
defensive unit’s record-setting perfor
mance.
Behind an offensive line that has
cleared the way for a state, leading
2,039 yards rushing over the last five
games, the Dawson County Tigers were
able to run the ball at will against the
Vikings.
Starting with senior running back
Ahmad Kamara’s two first quarter
touchdowns (of his three total) the
Tigers scored seven touchdowns on the
ground with senior Evan Abernathy,
junior Shawn Thomas, sophomore
Maximos Moon and Clark all tallying
one each on the night.
A 55-yard punt return for a score from
senior Noah Brock rounded out the
scoring and allowed the Tigers to com
plete a rare football feat by scoring
points with every unit of the team in a
single game.
With the total score of 64 combined
with the shut-out the Tigers set three
DCHS records: most points scored in a
single game, largest margin of victory
and largest shutout.
“The boys played well tonight,” said
Head Coach Sid Maxwell.
Featuring a 6-0 (2-0) record for the
first time in school history, the Dawson
County Tigers will travel to Norcross on
Friday, Oct. 5 to take on their regional
opponents the Greater Atlanta Christian
Spartans 4-2 (2-0).
