Dawson County News up
for GSBA Beacon Award
From staff reports
The Dawson County News has
been nominated by the Dawson
County Board of Education to be
considered for the Beacon Award
presented by the Georgia School
Boards Association for journalism
excellence.
“This board has enthusiastically
recommended that we nominate
Dawson News for the work that they
do in informing our citizens about
the work that we do,” said
Superintendent Damon Gibbs dur
ing the board’s Sept. 4 work session.
The Beacon Award recognizes
print and electronic media represen
tatives or organizations whose cov
erage over time has created under
standing of public education issues
by informing the general public
about programs, policies and issues
affecting public schools, students
and the community according to the
GSBA website.
Up to five awards will be present
ed in the categories of print and
electronic.
“Our local newspaper has helped
transform the way we communicate
with our parents and Dawson
County community. A designated
reporter attends all Board of
Education meetings, and checks in
regularly with our Superintendent so
that the most credible information is
delivered to our community,” the
nomination reads. “In addition,
through the creation of the 1 Dawson
Magazine, Dawson County News
has given us the opportunity to ‘tell
our story’ through a visually appeal
ing publication.”
Dawson County News was noted
for its efforts to keep the community
informed about school operations,
events, activities, improvement plans
and student achievement informa
tion.
Articles written by DCN staff cov
ering topics of school safety, the 1:1
iPad initiative, graduation rates, sui
cide prevention and the Exceptional
Children program as well as the
inaugural 1 Dawson magazine that
was released in the summer 2018
were included with the nomination.
The nomination was approved
unanimously by the board Sept. 10.
“With our community constantly
looking to the news and school sys
tem for information, it is imperative
that a strong partnership with our
local paper be embraced,” the nomi
nation continues. “Their support to
offer our public reliable information
is exceptional and second to none.
Our board of education recognizes
the true value that our Dawson
County News has on our communi
ty.”
The Beacon Awards will be pre
sented to the recipients at the
GSBA/GSAA Conference in
December.

State lifts summer burn ban; permits required
By Allie Dean
adean@dawsonnews.com
Residents of 54 counties
can now obtain permits to
burn yard debris after the
burning ban was lifted Oct. 1.
Dawson County is included
on the list of counties the state
Environmental Protection
Division banned from open
burning this year from May 1
through Sept. 30. Since 1996,
the EPD has imposed the ban
each year to comply with
Federal Clean Air regulations.
“During the summer
months in Georgia, the ozone
in the air we breathe can reach
unhealthy levels,” the Georgia
Forestry Commission website
reads. “The Georgia EPD has
identified open burning as a
significant contributor of the
pollutants that form ozone.”
There are several exemp
tions, including agricultural
burning, forestry prescribed
burning, campfires, barbecues
and firefighter training.
Residents can obtain a bum
permit by calling
1 (877)-OK2-BURN or by vis
iting www.gatrees.org/online-
permits/index.cfm.
According to the Georgia
Forestry Commission, no
household trash, garbage or
building materials can be
burned outdoors. The com
mission recommends keeping
a water supply close to the
bum site and keeping brush
piles small, with all flamma
ble material and vegetation
cleared within 10 feet of the
outer edge of the pile.
The Georgia Forestry
Commission office serving
Dawson, Forsyth and
Lumpkin counties is located
at 4500 Hwy. 53 in
Dawsonville and can be
reached at (706) 216-2713.
