Olive Garden approved for more parking

The Dawson County
Planning Commission on Nov.
20 voted unanimously to
approve a variance for addition
al parking for the Olive Garden
planned to go in at the comer of
Dawson Forest Road East and
Ga. 400 where Huck’s Apple
Barn formerly stood.
In an Oct. 11 application to
the county planning and devel
opment department, Olive
Garden Holdings requested 152
parking spaces as opposed to
the maximum 86, stating that
“if parking is inadequate it will
negatively impact the new res
taurant’s success.”
No representative from Olive
Garden Holdings was present at
the meeting but the planning
commission decided to move
forward with approving the
application.
“The reason for more parking
spaces is because they feel that
they always max out at every
location and they will need
more spaces to park. In addi
tion, staff has recommended
approval based on all of the
information that was presented
to them from Olive Garden,”
said Planning Commission
Chair Jason Hamby.
The variance will not need to
go before the board of commis
sioners.
The restaurant is the first of
several potential businesses to
be developed on the approxi
mately 9.4 acres next to the
Dawson Marketplace shopping
center. The application refer
ences a hotel planned for the
site and refers to the develop
ment as “Dawson Forest
Square.”

Black Friday got underway at the
North Georgia Premium Outlets at 6
p.m. on Thanksgiving and the large
open air mall stayed open all night for
eager shoppers to take advantage of
door buster sales.
“We’re seeing an increase in our
traffic numbers so far. But it’s kind of
interesting because ... we closed in
the middle of the night last year and
we were kind of stretching it out this
year so it will be interesting to see
how that plays out throughout the
day,” said Randall Jackson, Director
of Marketing and Business
Management for the outlet mall.
Around 4 p.m. Nov. 22, shoppers
began lining up at stores, two hours
before the mall officially opened,
hoping to be the first in line for holi
day deals.
Until 3 a.m. Friday morning, the
outlet mall parking lot was at more
