UNG has $620 million impact on region

The board of education
approved the new 2019-
2020 calendar for
Dawson County Schools
during the Dec. 10 board
meeting based on recom
mendations and feedback
from community mem
bers.
Through the electronic
feedback format
ThoughtExchange, partic-
ipants shared their
thoughts on how the
school calendar could be
improved for the upcom
ing school year.
During the meeting
Superintendent Damon
Gibbs said approximately
850 participants, mainly
parents and staff mem
bers, provided feedback.
One of the most notice
able changes to the calen
dar is a readjustment of
breaks.
A week-long fall break
at the end of September
has been nixed for 2019.
Instead, students will
receive three days off —
Friday, Sept. 20, Monday,
Sept. 23 and Tuesday,
Sept. 24. The extra days
have been applied to
February 2020, with fac
ulty and students receiv
ing a break from Feb. 13
to 17.
“The feedback
expressed a desire to have
multiple breaks spread
throughout the year,”
Gibbs said. “To add the
break between Christmas
and spring break, we
needed to shift some days
from the fall. We wanted
to maintain a balanced
calendar where we finish
the first semester before
the Christmas break.”
Students and staff will
still receive a weeklong

break in November for
the Thanksgiving holi
day, as well as a winter
break from Dec. 23 to
Jan. 7. Spring break will
be April 6-10.
Feedback from partic
ipants also expressed
concerns regarding the
number of early release
days.
“We had a number of
parents comment about
the difficulty of child
care on early release
days. In an effort to
meet the needs of the
community, we reduced
the number to less than
half and have made
plans to complete the
professional learning at
other times,” Gibbs
said.
In the current 2018-
2019 school calendar,
there are eight early
release days throughout
the year. The approved
2019-2020 school cal
endar has only three.
For faculty and staff,
flex planning days were
added for May 28, 2020
and July 29, 2020. It
will be each school’s
choice to use either
May 28 as a post-plan
ning day or July 29 for
preplanning.
School start and end
times were not changed.

school calendar is avail

DCN Regional Staff
The University of
North Georgia, across its
five campuses and online
programs, had an esti
mated $620 million eco-
nomic impact on
Northeast Georgia in the
2017 fiscal year.
A recent study mea
sured direct and indirect
spending that contributes
to the university’s service
region.
“This study is a timely
reminder of the signifi
cant role UNG has in
advancing economic
growth and prosperity in
the areas we serve,”
President Bonita C.
Jacobs said in a press
release. “The report com
plements our ongoing
work with industry and
community partners to
increase educational
attainment and regional
economic development
efforts that enhance this
region.”
While this figure,
reported this month in an
annual study by the
University System of
Georgia, comes with
caveats, it reveals the
growing impact UNG has
had on Hall County and
the wider region since its
establishment in 2013
with the consolidation of
North Georgia College &
State University in
Dahlonega and
Gainesville State College.
“At best, economic
impact numbers indicate a
positive contribution ...
but none of them are
infallible,” said Tim
Evans, vice president of
economic development at
the Greater Hall Chamber
of Commerce. “The eco
nomic impact is a mea
sure of institutional
spending and short-term
From staff reports
On behalf of the
Associated Credit Union
Foundation, Mark Waller,
executive vice president
and chief operating officer,
donated $5,000 to the
Good Shepherd Clinic of
Dawson County in
November 2018. The
donation is one of the larg
est received by the charita
ble group since opening
the clinic in 2009. ACU’s
Dawsonville Branch
Manager, Connie Smith,
participated in the occa
sion.
“I have been so privi
leged to work with the
Good Shepherd Clinic,”
Smith said. “Every experi
ence has been positive, and
I truly believe in the work
they are doing for the resi-
benefits.”
The report even
acknowledges that “there
was no attempt to evalu
ate the long-term impacts
of the University
System’s institutions on
the economic develop
ment of the host commu
nities and the state.”
“More than that,” the
report states, “there are
long-term benefits to
improving skills and life
long learning in the com
munity that are not
accounted in an economic
impact of spending.”
And it’s these potential
long-term benefits — the
direct impact of jobs and
benefits and spending
from UNG’s employment
— that have Evans and
officials at UNG focusing
on future growth and
development because of
the potential impacts on
community quality of life.
“Sometimes what’s lost
dents of Dawson County.”
The Good Shepherd
Clinic is a 501(c)(3) orga
nization behind Burger
King off Hwy. 53. Their
mission is to provide
health care services for
those in Dawson County
who would not typically
have access.
“We are grateful for the
donation from Associated
Credit Union,” said Kay
Parrish, executive director
of the Good Shepherd
Clinic. “Donations like
these are what help us con
tinue growing our outreach
and helping the residents
of Dawson County who
are in need.”

...is (these studies) don’t
consider the future value
of earned income from
degrees received from
UNG Gainesville (gradu
ates),” Evans said.
Most of UNG’s impact
is entailed in its operating
expenses, including sala
ries and benefits, as well
as other budgeted items.
The university’s
approximately 19,000 stu
dents spent an estimated
$248 million in the 2017
fiscal year, helping spur
the creation of 3,721 jobs
in the 17-county region
— which extends from
Gwinnett, Hall and
Forsyth on the southern
end, east to Clarke and
Oconee counties, and
north to Habersham and
Fumpkin counties —
according to the study.
On average, an addi
tional 52 cents is generat
ed for every dollar spent
by the university.
