Thk Kkd axi> Hi.ack is on its feet for the New Year and extends host wishes to every student in college for a |>ros|)croux and successful com |detion of the collegiate year. It should he the purpose of nil who did not make proper r. solutions at the beginning of the ti rnt to stop now, and consider, what you are here for. Whether you are here to make men worthy of the l r nivi rsiiy and the admiration of your friends at home, or wrecks and a disgrace to the sttte which gave you birth. There are many of you who will go out into the world of business and care at the close of the present term never to enter college again. Wherefore it is your solemn duty to self, the kind father and loving mother, who are expecting much in return for the various sacrifices made to keep you in college, that you avail yourself of every advan tage the college offers to improve your mental ami moral capacity. TIIK PANI)OUA, After much dilly-dallying the edi tors have decided to issue the Pan dora. \\ e are glad to hear it and wish them much success in their un. dertaking. The question of getting out a Pandora, however should not have been a sul jeet of debate. The student body of the University demands it, which should he enough within itself to guarantee the issuing. It is the only publication in the University which ts in any sense a souvenir of the year. The plan of former issue* will he maintained as nearly as possible, but they hope to improve upon the slaudard of quality ami attractive ness wherever it can he done, using their best judgment selecting uut- ter of greatest interest In the Col lege. It will be composed of all inter esting events of the year and sketches of the various orgtniza- lions. There will be half-tones of the editorial hoards and of the dramatio and athletic associations. Besides there will appear some timely jokes ami funny poems, and probably considerable miscellaneous matter which cannot now be men tioned. Knowing that the success of the publication depends on getting to gether the most interesting fiots of | the school year, the editors request 1 the college to submit to them what ever assistance they can and to keep this request continually in mind , 'til the book is sold. Track athletics for the present should compose no little part of our interest. There is some excellent material in college this year and with proper training “Field Day” promises to he an exceptionally good one. All those who are laggard, yet have records or ability, had best be gin work at once or they will find themselves gracefully bringing up the rear at the final tournament. There will he any number of events of which I will name a few of the most interesting: 1(MI yards dash, 220 yards dash, Quarter mile run, one mile run, putting 16 pounds shot, running high jump, running broad jump, pole vault, 120 yards hurdle, half mile run. THE NEW BULKS. The new rules governing absences from daily recitations or unan nounced examinations have been formulated and read to the different classes ami also a copy posted on the bulletin board. Under this regime the Chancellor has nothing to do with absences except those occuring in that department of which he is Professor, but all ex cuses must he rendered to the Pro fessor in whose department such absence occurs. This is an innova tion that is met with the approval of almost the entire student body, and that it is more just to the stu dents who keep up with their work and yet a fair and just measure to all, cannot he questioned. This matter of absences is one of much perplexity and trouble to those in authority, and these new rules will most likely tend to diminish the number of absences, as all absen ce* from unannounced examinations will he discounted in proportion to the length of time that elapses after the class has stood it before the ones that are absent stand it. It also relieves thoC’liancellor of much work that is necessarily involved in rendering excuses for absences. ATHENS HARDWARE CO. — DEALER* IN— tiun*. Pistols, Ammunition. Cutlery Jto.
