] THE RED AND BLACK. An Art Society. Editors Kkd and Black: There in an idea abroad in the University at present with regard to the establishment of an art soci ety. The object of this society will be to promote an interest for art in the University, and good feeling and friendship among its members; to form a sketching club and to hold regular meetings at which topics relating to painting, archi lecture, drawing and photography may be discussed, and essays read for the purpose of promoting that knowledge of art, which is at the present day indispensable to every thoroughly educated man, and to promote the practical aims of art which should be of importance anti interest to every one. I shall not try to commend the aims of the so ciety at this time, when a knowl edge of drawing is indispensable to j some professions, and particularly ! useful in all lines of scientific work, anti in the common works of life— j they commend themselves; but I , should 'ike to say that if this socie-! ty is fottoed, it will not only be for the purposes of those who are al- { ready artistic, hut to cultivate the love of art in all; aud moreover, that it will exact no fees or fines since this is the wish of the orjgina tor of the plan. Fellow students give this your >•< , consideration and hearty upport; do what you can to pro mote the influence of those great arts whose powers for good grow greater year by year. (’. T. II.
