/ f \ THE RED AND BLACK. Mr. K. Murphey, '9.% has returned to college from hi* home in Augusta, where ho ha* been ill for several dljri. Why ia it lliat the committee ap pointed tiy the different classes don't hold their meeting and elect the Varsity baseball captain. It is am ply warm to practice. At the Uni versity of Virginia, they have been practicing for at lean a month. On yesterday I observed over fifty boys in the V. M. C. A. gymnasium. It looks as if the preparations for j Field Day are enough to warrant ■ for it greater success even than it had last year. J I On Thursday, the day was devo ted hy three classes to final exami nations. It devolved upon Prof. McPherson to demonstrate clearly that there were facts in History un known even to a Freshman and in addition to convince the Seniors that they did not know more politi cal economy than Prof. Walker; to see if the Seniors h id more definite ideas on economic subjects than Dr. Kly. Prof. Utley bad the more con genial task of investigating how far the Juniors were impressed with the greatness of English authors. As yet we have not learned the success attending his observations. In spite of the earnest efforts, the tennis played in college as y» i here has been no University Tcnni t’lub organized. All the I'rali rintics have courts, but there is no court in college on which a tennis lonrna nielli could he In-Id. It is for this reason that a University club should be organized. Then we could h ive a grand court and there is so much talent in college that we could easi ly have a club that would compare favorably with the clubs of any Southern college. Let us unite to gether and organize the club at once, and during tin 1 spring months we could have at least an inter-col- j lege tournament that would excite great interests as there are so many lovers of tennis in college. The contest for anniversarian’s place in the Dcmnsthciii.au Society was held on last Saturday. Profs. McPherson Morris and Uev. Black constituted the committee of judges. Eloquent speeches » ere delivered by Messrs. Alexander, Bennett, t’irson. Guyton, Haskell, McGregor and Vow. The honor of representing the So ciety on the 19th inst., was awarded to Mr. Alexander, who well de served it; as his speech was full of thought, the phraseology beautiful and the delivery most excellent. The speeches of the other gentlemen did credit to them, and while they were defeated in the contest, they really suffer no loss; for every one will be amply intellectually repaid for all the time s|>ent in research of information and in composing his (as every oue was) creditable ora tion.
