THE RED AND BLACK.
DEMOSTU ENIA N SOCIKT V.
I.ast Saturday being the time set
apart for joint debate with the Phi
Kappa, only a short session was con
sumed. Tlie apeekonwere arranged
as follows: McGregor to lead in
contest. Loundea next, then Grif
fith, Carson, Larson, Floyd, Bran-
ncn, Kyals and Alexander to close.
Two committees were then appoint
ed—one to act with the Phi Kapa’s
to notify Prof. John Morris that he
was elected to preside over the de
bate and the other to visit Mr. Has
kell and conduct him to the Phi
Kappa hall. This committee soon
returned with Mr. Haskell's deep
regrets that nocturnal perambula
tions and diurnal KA8T-atious had ren
dered him unable to assist us in the
joint discussion.. We then proceed
ed to the above named hall, where
we were warmly welcomed and
pleasantly entertained, notice of
which will bo read elsewhere in
this issue.
After the joint debate was over j
we returned to the Demosthenian
hall and elected Mr. Kyals as private
anniversarian. A motion was then
made to postpone election of spring
dchutois three weeks from that time,
and at said election not to allow
any member of society to vote who
had not by that time paid all his
dues. After some discussion both
pro and con the motion was carried
and all members will please remem- |
her this, if they care to vote at
coming election.
Immediately irfter the Anniversa
ry exercises at the chapel on Mon
day, a meeting was held, to which
Phi Kappas were invited, Vico Pres
ident Bncou, of the Phi Kappa was
called to the chair, and the floor ex
tended u> Mr. Brannon, who made a
splendid speech, appropriate to the
occasion. He was followed by lti-
loy, Dr. Lanier, McGregor and Mr.
T. W. Heed of Athens Banner. In
all these addresses Mr. Alexander
was congratulated for his fine An
niversary oration, and the society
for its fortunate selection of a re
presentative.
Mr. W. T. Harris W>, visited
home-folks in Macon last Sunday.
Mr W. D. Griffith who was with
us Inst year in Freshman class,
visited the boys on the campus last
week. Though in the first class of
tho University, Mr. Griffith made a
good reputation as a scholar and
debator during the few months he
was in college.
——-
If carrying tnuigents and stripped
poles over the campus, driving up
pegs and leaving them to bruise
corns and sore toes, will make civil
or military engineers, Messrs. Keves
and Lindsay will surely become
proficient in one of these avocations
before the “hot season."

Into those eyes of love
1 cannot bear to gaze.
Though I’ll ne'er cease to love
Or e’er forget their praise,
For in their light I live
Though not for me they shine,
Though my all to them gave—
Vowed my love many a time.

The boys have begun to take more
