On the front pngc we publish a
communication from our esteemed
friend Dr. C. H. Herty.
l)r. Herty's position upon athletic
reform is most commendable and wo
hope every student of the Univoriity
will study carefully the meaning
and advantage which will accrue to
the Uuiversily if his letter is proper
ly heeded. The danger of inter
collegiate professionalism confronts
us, nnd we cannot he too careful in
keeping it hack. Defeat with an
honest nnd bona tide team is a great
deal more to he desired than a vie
lory dishonestly won.
Cultivate an athlcclic spirit in
college by sll means, hut let your
moti he truly lion - professional and
above all, rightfully matriculated.
Tiik Kkp amd Black has not ap
peared for the last three weeks for
the most plausible reasons we can
advance. They are these: The

Despite a slight ripple towards the
latter part, the game of ball yester
day was characterized throughout
by good feeling nnd satisfactory
playing. Some heavy hatting w'us
done on both sides, hut the game
developed the fact that both teams
have much good material.
—
Quith a number of new students
have been standing entrance exami
nations the past few days. These
examinations are not matters of
mere form, hut the raising of the
standard and examination of the
University has proportionately in
fluenced the entrance examinations,
making them more difficult and re- |
quiring a hoy to ho better prepared j
before entering college. The hoy |
who enters college well prepared
pursues his course at a much greater
advantage than those who are ni t
prepared.
-
The prospect for athletics at the
l niversity next year is veryenconr-
aging. The Messrs. Spain, of Quit-
man, both splendid athletes, and
Fred Morris, now at Emory, will
come over together with seveal
other men with good reputations us
athletes from different sections of
the State.
