r h k RED AND BLACK. A Card from the State University. To the Kditor of the Telegraph: To a student of the university or no) one interested in it» welfare, the nrlieles repeatedly piililiHhed of Inti 1 in the leading newspapers of the State are hot glowing columns of glaring misrepresentations, serv ing hut to prejudice the institution in the minds of (Georgia's citizens and to place insuperable dilHeultiei in the way of its advancement and prosperity. If all the wild tales that spring from Athens, with the evil doings of the university hoys as their invariable themes, were but true these young scapegraces would have an array of sin registered against them that would lie fully sufficient to overwhelm them in their depravity, and, in future, the name of an alumnus id' the Univer sitv of Georgia would bear with it the accompanying surmise of a young manhood m which a bountiful sow ‘lug of “wild oats” was made. Al most any issue of one of the huger dailies contains a special from Alh ens devoted largely to a portrayal of riotous acts and indecencies com mitted by the college hoys. Now it would lie folly for me to adopt the high stand that tile university hoys are free from the vices to which young men of the period are addicted, hut I do maintain that among any other two hundred and fifty men gathered promiscuously from over Georgia, it would he hard to liml as large a number among them who conduct themselves in as orderly and sober manner and are as studious as the average young men of our colleges. This is written in the desire to see justice accorded the institution that has given many of Georgia’s talented young men educations which have proved the means of raising her sons to the high places in our State and enshrining hi their hearts an undying love for the dear old alma mater. by never more than a quartette of young artists, who seek immunity from discovery by the smallness of their numbers. This in itself is but a harmless piece of mischief, and as for obscenity painted on the fences opposite, if any boy has been guilty of such an act he he has not seen fit to acknowledge it among Itis fel lows. Moreover, no expulsions have re sulted from this great episode, not withstanding the many assertions to the contrary made by the ener getic correspondents of Athens. .I.VMKS II. lit TNKR.
