THE TOURNAMENT OF THIS WEEK
ABA ^ONED FOR LACK OF EN-
TRIlS.-SOMETHING ABOUT
THE MAY TOURNEY.
If.there be one question that has
been asked of the tennis manager
often enough to run any one crazy,
it is : When are you going to have
a tournament} 1 If there be a man
in college who has ever seen a ten
nis racket and has not made that
'iiquiry, let him know that he is,
most decidedly, what most of our
younj/ men strive to be considered—
eccentric. ,
Partly to arouse intt re t in the
sport, but principally—it must be
confessed—to save his ears from
being worn out, when they are yet
so young and tender, by that in
iquitous inquiry, the manager post
ed notices to the effect tint a tour
nament would be held on the cam
pus on Friday, Saturday and Mon
day afternoons.
lie then went in haste and pur
chased several pads and a dozen
pencils, in order that be might be
able to write down the long iist of
entries, imagine his surprise—nay,
his consternation—when the time
for the iist of entries to be closed
came, and but six moil had signified
their intention of playing.
These were the only days a tour
ramunt could he had without con-
Hiding with base ball games. There
will lie no preliminary tournament
now.
Tin; regular tourney will proba
bly begin on the nineteenth of May.
.Mr. Patterson has offered h cup for
the winner of the singles. The
winner this year will hold the cup
until next year, when he will have
to defend it against next year's
champion. If any one will it two
successive years, tile cup becomes
his property. Other prizes will, if
possible, be got for the winners of
the doubles, and for the second best
players.
Men, who think that they have no
chance at all for the championship,
seemed not disposed to enter at all.
Kvery one should go in, in order to
get his relative stand ; tin; experi
ence would also be beneficial to
him. ,
In the manner of drawing that
will be puisued, a man who is nut
so good a player may play longer
in the tourney than one who is quite
an exp. rt. Ali of the names are
placed in a hat and are drawn out
two at a time. Those drawn out
together play against each other.
In the doubles, partner* are consid-
ere I as one man. Men should choose
their partners for the doubles at
once and get to work, as team work
j is very important. When a man is
onee beaten, he drops out of the
tournament. The following model
shows how a tourney with eight n*s-
trees would work out:

This year’s contest for oratorical
honors in the Junior and Sophomore
classes has been most exciting.
More interest lias been manifested
than in the past, and better speech
es liavo been delivered. As the
Professor of English, Dr. liilevf re
marked, “It is as much honor to
have gotten a plane in the Sopho
more class of 'PH as it was last year
io get the medal.”
Only four of the Junior speakers

ing the past few years given some
very enjoyable entertainments.
It has been an established custom
of this chapter to give a pienio onee
every year, and on Inst Saturday
this annual event took place at Tnl
lassuc shoals.
No affair of the kind ever given
in Athens has been more success
fully planned and carried out in all
t^ie details. About one hundred
and twenty people availed them
selves of tho invitations by the Chi
Phi’s extended, and eight jolly wag
on loads of laughing and shouting
humanity wended their way l» the
appointed place at about eleven
o'clock Saturday. Tlie spirit of rev
elry bad obtained bold on every
one and the whole day was one end
less frulic. Dancing was indulged
in in a criuuhlingly romantic look
ing mill before and after the ele
gant dinner (always important at
picnics) was served.
Loving couples strolled hero and
there, saying pretty things they
didn't mean to each other, ami they
do say that one or two manly arms,
etc, (hut that's another story, as
Kudyurd Kipling says.)
Al half past six the crowd left
the grounds tired but happy, and all
voted tho Chi Phi fraternity enter
tainers of tlie first water.

AN ENJOYABLE EVENING.
The most enjoyable event of the
Week, iu Athens society, was the :
“Progressive Conversation Party”
given last evening by .Miss Nanette
Hodgson to the Voting People's
German Club and a few selected
friends. Miss Hodgson is a charm-1
ingly graceful hostess and as there
is no better place to entertain a
crowd than on the pruily lawn in
front of her home, and as the night
was an ide al one, it is neediest to
say that everyone enjoyed them
selves. Thu id ea was quite an ori
ginal one for everybody selected
tlie persons witli whom they talked
ai l made Cugageim nts for fifteen
minute conversations.
Elegantly dainty refresh mu lit*
were served an 1 at a late hour the
guests departed all to fill pages in
their Mi timir Hooks with aceounl*
of this enjoyable evening.
