j ) THE RED A Vol. III. University of Georgia, Athens, Ga., May 15,1896. No. •_>«>. SAVANNAH DEFEATED BY GEORGIA. THE BOYS ENJOYED A FINE TRIP. Major Meldrim Tenders a Reception. It was a jolly, good-natured crnwd that left Athens Tuesday afternoon on the Macon and Norl'iern at three o’clock for Savannah. After an un eventful trip, the party arrived in Macon at 7:10, and went immediate ly to.the Hotel Lanier where, after preparing their toilet and l’liny Hall had with much trouble found the soap they partook of a hearty meal. After supper some went to see a few of Macon’s fairest daugh ters who had a particular attraction for them, while others wandered here and there, under the guidance of a few Macon friends, viewing the various sights of the Central City until they were ready to leave on the sleeper for Savannah at 12:08. After a good night’s rest, the party arrived in Savannah at7:10, where they were met by a delegation of Savannah hoys. Through the efforts of Mr. J. 1. Killuiiu and Mr. J. Klsiuger, and with the assistance of a few devo ted alumni, among whom were Messrs. 1*. W. Meldrim,S. 1!. Adams, l’ope Harrow, Jno. U. Young, \V. I.. Clay, W. S. Chisholm, \V. \V. Fra sier and T. \V. Cunningham, Jr., the hoys were shown every possible at tention. The commodious rooms of the Y. M. C. A. were turned over to tin in, which they made their head quarter*, and meals were furnished the entire party at an adjacent cafe. (They do say that Capt. Morris got up a case with one of the beautiful waitresses at Ineakfast on account of his bewitching smile, and many other things are said, hut they will he continued in our next 1 Before the game the hoys weie shown a few of the sights of Sa vannah, and all rinitc‘1 llo- DeSolo Hotel, which is a magnificent struc ture and one of the finest hotels in the South. Here they lit au exhibition drill given by '.he '/. niave*, of Aurora, III., who showed themselves to he perfect in every possible movement. Those members of the University Bslal lion who were present were some what abashed, hut le irmda goo I deal in the way of drilling. After a few preliminary details had been arranged, the game be gan with the C. L. A. at the hat. I’ettis and Short and Nalley were the battery for Georgia, while Cum mings and Harper and McAvoy held the same positions for the C. L. A. Owing to the fact that no detailed official score was kept wo are tillable to give one, hut the fol lowing is the score of the game by innings. Georgia I! :t 0 g I 0 0 1 x —13 ' . 8. A. 1 0 1 It g 0 0 3 0-0 The special features of the game were the home-run by .Morris, the long run and catch by Short, the excellent base running ami fielding by Georgia, and the poor playing by the C. L. A. According to the Savannah Hress, the fielding of our men was brilliant, and the team work the best ever seen on a dia mond by an amateur team. After the game, the team went to the Y. M. C. A., and after changing costumes, repaired to the residence of Major H. \V. Meldrim, where a reception was tendered the Georgia hoys. The red and black hunting was conspicuous oil the front stoop, and bs it was waved to and fro by tlic delightful breezes from the Savannah, it waft'd its own symbolic spirit of love and brother hood into the palatial residence within. The boys were received by Major and Mrs. Meldrim, our own beloved Mrs. I)r. II. C. White, whose beaming countenance appeared as radiant as ever, and by Miss Collier, Miss Meldrim, Miss Haines, Mias Harwood ami Misses Nesbitt^?), I everything j was jjjt y to make the hoys feel comforHime ami happy. Delightful and dainty re fresiinieuts wi re served and a wl ile —short hut pleasant w is passed in conversation with the young hos tesses, whose charming beauty, lev iug ways mid elegant gracefulness will long he x subject fur pleasant contemplation by those fortunate enough to he present. After the college yells and cheers for M ijor Meldrim and the ladies had been given, the hoys departed, and short ly afterwards were placed in gaily decorated tallalioes, and shown tile the sights of the Forest City. They were driven to Bonaventiirn Ceme tery, whose large trees spreading their branches in every direction and heavily laden with gracefully hanging moss indeed presented a sight beautiful to behold. After leaving Bonarenture com etery, the party was driven to Thunderbolt, Greenidge and the handsome quarters of the Yacht Club. The drill given by the Uni versity boys at thf last-mentioned place under command of Lieut. West, of Savannah, and Messrs. French and Kvans, was particularly enjoyable. The action of the boys at the command “rhea” inarch was applauded on all aides. After leaving the Club House the party was driven over the main streets of Sivannah, arid left the Forest City about nine o’clock that night, arriving in Athens yesterday afternoon at 12:30. In behalf of the party, we wish to extend our hearty thanks to Messrs. Killorin and Elsinger and the other Savannah boys to our distinguished alumni — especially Maj.
