WOMEN IN OUR UNIVERS TY.
In last Sunday’s Constitution there
is a lout; article on the subject of
II'ook/i in f Mieersi/i,*, and a strong
plea is made in favor of opening the
doors of our University to women.
Tin* w omen of the St it Fi 1 i iti
of Georgia w ill present a petition to ever suited for use by girls. Some
the Hoard of Trustees of the Uni of the advocates of the plan seem

two thousand women of the State, aceommodate HIM* boys, it can ac-
askiug the Hoard to extend the commodate 250 boys and 5') girls,
privileges of the University lo the just as well. This is entirely an un-

vail.
The whole argument in favor of
the movement is based on what t’nev
are pleased to call woman's right to
an eijual edue ition with man, and
her need for such an education lo
til her for the legitimate sphere of
her activity. This is a strong posi
tion, and, in our opinion, it is right
and just. We know the Stall* owes
as high a duty to the girls ns to the
hoys, and indeed, we iglit say, a
higher duty, hut the Slate does not
owe exactly the same duty to both.
The girls of the Stale <lo have a
right to higher idiication; they have
a light to demand that the Stale
shall furnish means for its attain
ment. The sphere of their activity
probably ought to he enlarged, ami,
in order that it may he enlarged,
increased lacililies lor higher, cdu
cation are necessary. Their inter
ests along this line have been lie.'-
levied, nml we are glad lo see them
making demands for better oppoi-
liiuiliea lor higher cdiicutiou. Most
of till* colleges fill* young ladles in
this Stale do not have as high a cur
riculum as they should have; not as
high as the intellectuality of the
girle demands that llieli should
have I liese lads are recognised
by all, hut w hen it comes to rem
edy ing these wrongs l,y opening the
doors of our University lo women,
We tail to see the economy, the
practicability ami the wisdom of
the scheme. We do not
knowledge that there is
particular advantage, in the co-ed
ucation ut the sexes /<*r ne that is
sufficient to justify the demand that
is being made that the advantages
of the University be extended to
women, and if provisions can be
made for the higher education of
tlie girl elsewhere, it will he more
salisfory and productive heller
results lo all partus concerned. At
present it need hardly be said that
the equipment of the University is
inadequate for the hoys who are
now in attendance, to say nothing of
its entire unfitness for girl*. The
accommodations are rough even for
boys, aud certainly in noway what-
circum
scribed ol* hindered by the adoption
of a scheme which is so wholly un
filled for the accomplishment of the
purpose for which it is intended. We
are ready to make sacrifice* if need
he, in order that the girls of the
State may receive a higher and
broader college education, but the
l Diversity should hesitate before it
adopts a change that might impair
its present usefulness, unless there
is stronger evidence than seems ap
parent that the change will meet
the end for which it is intended.
