EDITORIAL COMMENT.
Tiik Kkii ami Black cannot
sufficiently express its gratitude
to those sttnli'iifs wlio kindly
contributed voluntarily towards
raising the debt from the paper.
And I'spocial thanks arc due
Messrs. T. N. I ten mark and Will
I >avis for collecting the moneys
subscribed.
Our sincere thanks are due
Mr. It. M. Charlton for the
great aid he has given us in
getting out this issue. Our
former local editor, Mr. J. 15.
MfOurry, not having returned
to college, wo were somewhat
concerned regarding the local
page, mud Mr.Charlton kindly
responded to our request for aid.
I'tuler the existing circum
stances the delay of the Run
ami lit.auk's appearance was
unavoidable. For the benefit of
those who are not familiar with
these circumstances it may be
said that the preceding year left
the paper in debt to quite an
extent ; and this debt was caused
by the failure of students and
others to pay their subscrip
tions. Consequently the Fac
ulty decided to stop the publi
cation of the paper until half
of the debt could be paid. A
great many students then came
forward and voluntarily gave
towards paying tins debt. Thus
we are able at last to resume
the publication of the paper.
The victory of last Saturday
should serve in some measure
to stop the tongues of pessimis
tic youths, and make them use
their supertiunus wind in yell
ing for the 'Varsity. Mecause
we hare lost one out of three
ganti s so far, we should not give
up till hope of having a victo
rious season. It is well known
that Sew a nee had a great ad
vantage over us in her training ;
and her su|>erior team work no
doubt won the game for her.
However, we are satisfied that
we have the material, and all it
needs is time. We have -till to
meet Auburn and North Caro
lina. and show them what Oeor-
gia can do.
Why is it that afternoon af
ter afternoon the crowd has to
be begged not to crowd tne foot
ball field? Surely they do not
think that it is pleasant for the
team and coach to be compelled
to stop playing every few min
utes while the crowd is being en
treated to make way and give
the players more room.
It would Im much more pleas
ant for all parties concerned,
if those who are not out in uni
form would sit together on the
bleacher. The various plays
can he seen from there very dis
tinctly, and while watching the
'Varsity practice, the various
college songs and yells may he
indulged in. Thus till parties
would be beuefitted.
WELCOME TO NEW STUDENTS.
Tilt; Kko and Black extends
a hearty welcome to the mem
bers of class of l!Ht:{, and wish
es for one and till it pleasant and
instructive career in the Uni
versity.
From observation, we deem
this class one of the most repre
sentative that hits been in the
institution in years, and we in
dulge the hope that subsequent
developments will in every re
spect hear out this impression.
The class numbers, approxi
mately Ho, and these young
men, with the basis of tin edu
cation already laid,should prove
it potential factor in maintain
ing the prestige of the Uni
versity.
WELCOME TO THE CHANCELLOR.
Though late in otl'ering it,
none the less hearty is the wel
come Tiik Rki» and Mi.ack ex
tends to Chancellor Hill with
this issue.
It is with great pleasure that
we welcome it chancellor who is
a man of rounded parts, a man
with it name unsullied and vet
widely known. We believe that
in Mr. Hill the University has
found a worthy head, capable
and energetic, possessing the
ability to guide with an unerr
ing hand our institution, upon
a course marked out with a far-
seeing eye, and able to ward off
the danger^.it£-ing from prcjtj-
i dice and ignorance. We believu.
the choice to he a peculiarly for
tunate one. His experience as
one of the most distinguished
members of t In* legal profession
will be of great advantage in
conducting tlie affairs of the
University that require learning
not found in books. His schol
arly attainments are unques
tioned, and lie has imbued his
oflice with an air of learning
and dignity.
Unlike a great number of his
predecessors, he is not promi
nently identilied with any one
religious sect, and therefore
gives no colouring of sectarian
ism to the State University.
At the same time he is an in
tensely religious man, and im
parts to the University a tone of
great morality.
He is an alumnus of the Uni
versity, whose head he now is.
lie has Iter good at heart, as
only tin alumnus can. lie is ac
quainted with her history and
traditions,and it is no stranger’s
hand, hut ^soil's, that protects,
and guides mid strengthens her.
We believe that in the length
and breadth of the land, no one
could he found so well fitted for
(hi- position as Mr. Hill, and it
is with this belief in our hearts
that we welcome him.
Wo welcome him to his new
home, new position, and new
duties, and trust that they have
become as dear to him, as he
has endeared himself to the stu
dents of the University of Ooor-
!gia.
In the same breath with which
we welcome the class of ’03, we
fc>d it our duty to let them know
that their conduct on the night
of Wednesday, Sept. 2(1, was
anything hut smart. It is very
well to go out, have a good time
mid “ paint the town red.”
Mut when it comes to defacing
churches, places of public wor
ship, then the matter should he
taken in hand by the upper
classmen, and the Freshmen
should he made to know that
such outrageous conduct will
not be permitted.
