It istptite a tilting tribute to Mr. Meldrim that lie should have been selected its tile first of Uni versity Alumni to deliver an address to the student hotly, lie lias been called “a model* Alumnus," and the title is a deserved one. Mr. Meldrim was a member of the class of 18G8, and lias attended every com mencement of the University since bis graduation, lie is now President of the University Alumni Association, and is con stantly working for the upbuild ing of bis alma mater. The close attention or the en tire audience was held through the eighty minutes in which Mr. Meldrim spoke. I le selected the character of Cicero as a model to be held up to the college man of today, and drew many les sons of great practical value j from tlie life of the great Unman lawyer and statesman. Cicero combined all the at tainments of a scholar with those of a successful man of affairs. He was a good soldier, a good lawyer, a good statesman and a good scholar. lie pos sessed great tact and great cour age. It was his pleasure to defend the helpless, and lie did not fear to pie id the cause of the innocent, oven iu the face of the displeasure of those in high places. In conclusion, Mr. Meldrim impressed upon all students the importance of following tlie motto that actuated all of Cice ro’s life; “Do right and work hard." The young ladies of Lucy Cobb attended the address in a body, and by their presence added much to the pleasure of the occasion. Chancellor Hill merits tlie thanks of the whole student body for providing for them these addresses from University Alumni; and the visit of Mr. Meldrin has proved how pleas ant and profitable these occa sions can lie made.
