that on the birth-day of our
great chieftain we do something
to recall to our minds that not
forty years ago, under his lead
ership, our fathers fought for
all that was nearest and dearest
to them. And that in the story
of the four years of that strug
gle is wrapped the history of the
bravest deeds most sacred to us.
Too apt are we in this day of
unions and reunions, to regard

do what will remind us of the
times when our fathers fought
for what they knew was right,
and when duty was their only
watchword.

while it perhaps merits some
