Washington and Lee Debate
Iln* tlmnks of the University
are due to Messrs. Marshbiirn
and Parker for the masterly way
in whklrthey upheld tile credit
of the institution in the recent
debate with Washington and Lee.
It has been a greut pleasure to
the students of the University of
Georgia to come in contact with
the representatives of Washing
ton ami l,ee University. We can
understand from the impression
these gentlemen have mude upon
us, why Washington and Ia*e
should stand so very high
in the estimation of the
people. These gentlemen are
surely to the “manor born.”
Their perfect courtesy and the
splendid way in which they ac
cepted defeat after their realy
masterly speeches, completely
Won the heart of the University.
To defeat such a team of
gentlemen is certainly a great
honor, though the victory is
fraught with pain at their defeat.
May our relations with Wash
ington and Ia>e be ever as cordial
as they are at present, and may
our future representatives on
their visit to Lexington he able
to win the hearts of the students
there as (heir’s have done here.
1-ast week we were under the
impression that Georgia’s claim
to the cup was not definitely set-
tied, hut we have sjnee been in
formed that Georgia now has the
cup for all time, as Tech’s pro
test didn’t materialize.
THE BAND
The work of the hand during
the haselmll season deserves the
highest praise and thanks of
every one. The spirit shown by
the members of the hand shows
that they are full of the good old
true Georgia spirit. They were
always there, and never showed
a sign or “quitting.” When
Georgia's chances seemed close,
the hand was always leading the
rooting, and there is no doubt
hut that a number of our runs
can he put to the credit of Geor
gia’s hand. When the hand
would strike up “Glory to old
Georgia,” if seemed as if we
could root harder, and it had the
same effect on the team, that
Dixie had on the old Oonfeds,
Not often will we find men so
willing to do and keep on the go,
just for the sake of college spirit.
They showed college spirit which
was genuine and substantial. It
counted for something and cost
trouble. We all know that it is
no easy thing to work like they
worked, while others sut around
and yelled “give us “Glory to
Old Georgia.” Hut never a com
plaint came from the band, but
the answer swept across the field
as only Georgia’s hand could
send it. They not only had the
spirit and will to do, hilt they
made good.
In behalf of the whole student
body, the Ked and Black tenders
their thanks and appreciation to
each member of Georgia’s hand.
Did you notice the spirit with
which Georgia took defeat last
Saturday? If it wasn’t for the
fuct that Tech wason tlie street;
a person would have been unable
to tell w hether Georgia had won
or lost. We were all proud of
our team and the way they play
ed hall, and not a knock or kick
could we hear from Georgia men.
Our spirit won us more support
ers than a victory would have
made, and it actually drew forth
the praise of Vice President!
Fairbanks, w ho congratulated us
on the game and sportsmanlike |
manner in which we took defeat.
You just can’t kill the old
Georgia spirit. We never “quit”
or “He down.” Let us always
work on the principle that a de-!
feated team can he game to the.
core, and it will win for us!
admirers and candidates for our
teams. If any promising prep
athletes were at the game Satur
day, there is no doubt hut that
they were struck hv Georgia’s
spirit. Keep it up Georgia, if
we feel dow nhearted over defeat,
“it get’s yer nothin.” hut if we
tight with the never-say-die
spirit we will always rank with
the best.
