THE RED AND BLACK
SOUTHERN STU
DENT CONFERENCE
To be Held at the Asheville Farm
School, North Carolina, June
15th to 24th, 1906
For tlie pant thirteen year* u
(rreat many young men from the
Southern colleges have met each
Hummer in the Southern Stmlent
Conference of Young Men’s
Christian Associations. This
Conference lias done much for
our Southern youth, and has
crown until it is recognized as
one of the most powerful organi
zations for good in America.
This year the students will hold
their meeting from June lfrtli to
June ‘21th, inclusive.
The Principal of the Asheville
Farm School, l’rof. .1. P. Unger,
has kindly tendered the use of
the building and grounds of this
school for the convening of tin
sessions. The location of this
School is eight miles from Ashe
ville, North Carolina. It is
among some of the most beauti
ful scenery in the whole country.
The campus contains excellent
athletic fields and tennis courts,
which together with the invigor
ating mountain air will keep the
men in splendid condition physi
cally.
As practically all know, the
purpose of the Conference is to
deepen the spiritual life of stu
dents. to train them for leader
ship t the organized Christian
work in this respective Institu
tions, and to open up to them op
portunities for Christian service
after leaving college. The speak
ers, teachers, and leaders have
been chosen because of their Ill
ness in life, scholarship and
experience to help students to
grapple with the problems which
they are meeting, both in their
own lives and in their Associa
tions.
Just to mention the fact that
Robert K. Speer will be there is
enough to arouse the enthusiasm
of a college man. In the writer's
opinion Mr. Speer is the greatest
spiritual man of today. Vet the
Conference will by no means rely
only upon this one man Prof.
Edward I. Itosworth, l’h. 1)., of
Oberlin University, and Mr.
Clayton 8. Cooper, New York
City, and Mr. NY. I> Weather
ford are among a number of
other consecrated men who will
bo present.
While there w ill he many at
tractive features of pleasure, yet
there will be plenty of hard work
for the representatives. An
hour each will be given daily to:
1. Missionary Conferences; 2.
Bible Classes; II. Conferences
on student Association work; 4.
Life-work meetings out of doors
under the trees; 5. Conferences
on the problems of the day which
confront the Christian people of
America This does not mention
the daily platform faature and
other privileges. The afternoons
are devoted to track meets, base
ball games, etc., and other forms
of recreat ion.
It is the intention of the Uni
versity of Georgia Association to
have <piite a delegation to attend
this year, and it is hoped that
much good will be derived from
it.
In the recent three cornered
track meet among Vanderbilt,
Texas and Tulane Universities
Vanderbilt and Tulane tied for
first place with tilt points each,
while Texas came last, with 80
points to her credit.
An incident, showing the un
certainty of baseball dope, hap
pened last week when Trinity
college bested the University of
Virginia by a score of 4 to 2.
Trinity had s tillered defeat at
tin* hands of Georgia, the latter
was beaten by Virginia, and now
Trinity suddenly turns around
and wallops Virginia.
